Finally, I reached over and took the Blue Orb from her bag. “Do you want to explain this?”

Her eyes locked on it and her mouth fell open.

But no noise came from it.

She looked from it to me.

Her eyes shivered as her mind worked hard to find a reason — any reason — to plausibly explain what was so obvious:

She had stolen it.

I had shown it to her, what it did, and she had decided to take it for herself.

But why?

“I…” she began.

I didn’t interrupt her.

I wanted to hear the reason… although I couldn’t for the life of me think of a good one.

She extended her hand to me. “It’s better if you give it to me,” she said. “You… shouldn’t know too much.”

Okay… so that was definitelynotwhat I was expecting.

I felt the weight of the Orb in my hand but didn’t hand it to her.

Hurried footsteps rushed up to the door and it flew open.

I hastily tucked the Blue Orb in my pocket before reaching down and helping Layla up.

I dusted off the dirty hem of her dress as Oggen glared at me.

No doubt he’d been told about me heading into this reading room by myself and he didn’t approve.

Tough luck.

I grabbed Layla’s bag and handed it to her.

She clutched it to herself like her life depended on it.

“Layla just had an accident, that’s all,” I said. “She was on her way out. She has an important appointment to make and she won’t be delayed any further.”

I took Layla by the arm and bulldozed my way through the security officers.

I led her in the direction of the front door.

I pulled to a stop and turned her to me. “Well?” I said.

“Well, what?” she said defensively.

“Why did you take the Blue Orb?”

Her eyes darted between mine.

Between the reading room’s floor and standing here now, she had regained some of her composure.

“I told you,” she said. “It’s best if you don’t know too much.”
