But yes, that was what the Governor had warned me about, wasn’t it?

That he would try to force me into a corner, to make me act out of character, to make me say things that might give myself away.

I couldn’t act too confident or he would know something was up.

And I couldn’t act too afraid either as he would sniff out I reallydidhave something to fear his discovering — that I wasn’t alone and that the Governor and his squad were right beside me!

It was a difficult balancing act but one I had to pass with flying colors or else risk my sister’s — and her darling little ones’ — lives.

“Do you want this Orb or are we going to chat all day?” I snapped.

There was a pause on the other end of the line and I wondered if I hadn’t pushed him too far.

I kept the doubt off my face as best I could.

And then it occurred to me; the one saving grace that I might be able to rely on…

He probably wasn’t used to dealing with too many humans.

He couldn’t have grown up with many of them and couldn’t have gotten used to their facial expressions, their way of expressing their emotions…

Or did he?

I had no idea.

But maybe, just maybe, even if I did slip up, he wouldn’t have noticed anyway.

It was my last hope as I didn’t intend on giving away too much.

“Very well,” the little leader announced. “Let us begin the handover. I no longer wish to be on this planet any longer than I need to. It bores me. Go to the city office buildings and await further instructions.”

“What instructions—?” I managed before he ended the call.

There was a long beat of silence before the Governor and his squad erupted for the second time today — and this time, it was in positive jubilation.

I felt three hard thumps on my back and deep voices congratulating me on a great performance.

It was eerie as they still hadn’t emerged from the holographic surroundings of my bedroom yet.

The Governor emerged, stepping forward through a nonexistent wall, and beamed down at me. “Well done,” he said. “Very well done indeed. Now we know where he wishes to meet you.”

But there was an intense look of concern on his face.

He didn't look pleased I would soon have to put myself in harm’s way.

Neither, in all honesty, was I.

The ship droppedme off three blocks from the city offices.

Just far enough away that the little leader and his motley crew wouldn’t see me coming.

At least, that was what theythoughtwould happen.

And who was I to second-guess them?

These guys had atonof experience.

They stood at the hatch door entrance, waiting as the Governor escorted me to the end of the block.
