“Axel, what the hell are you doing?”

Hedidn’t respond, shutting the door after scooping me out of the car.Panicked,Istruggled against him.Realizinghe wouldn’t let go,Ipulled my scarf as far down my face as possible.Idoubted the small disguise would work, but it was all the armorIhad to spare.

“Axel,”Iwhispered. “Ican’t.Ican’t do this.Ichange my mind.Ihave to leave.”

Axeltensed as he carefully set me down.Theslight frown on his forehead dictated his displeasure over my comment.Astipulatory hush fell amongst the masses simultaneously.Theyhad expectedAxelto exit the car but had instead bore witness to my unexpected presence.Theywere wondering about my identity, no doubt.

Axelanswered their unspoken question by turning me to face him with a hand wrapped around the nape of my neck and the other around my middle.

“Don’t!”Ihissed.Ifwe didn’t have an audience,Iwould have told him off for holding a married woman this intimately.Theright was reserved for my husband.Instead,Ideclared, “Idon’t belong here.”IfJayor my family saw us entangled in this position, they’d assumeIhad run off withAxel.Therewas no other way of interpreting such a cozy embrace.Theglint in his eyes reflected that he knew it, too.

Axelignored me, pulling me closer to shatter any possible disillusions over the extent of our acquaintance.JustwhenIthought my life was over, he sealed the deal by swooping and kissing me in front of hundreds of people.

Ipushed at his chest with ferocity.Itonly made him kiss me with such absolution thatImomentarily forgot about our audience.

Itwasn’t an ordinary kiss but rather a display of possession in the way his tongue invaded my mouth, his hands exploring my body.Iwas breathless by the time he allowed an inch between our mouths to whisper, “Thisis exactly where you belong.Don’tforget.Youagreed to this,Princess.”

Iforced my eyes open to find my hands clutchingAxel’sgray t-shirt.Swiftly,Ilet my gaze fleet over the onlookers to assess the damage.Hordesof young women digested the scene, the pipe dreams of becomingMrs.DJAxelturning to dust.Thesilence remained for half a second longer until someone snapped a photo.Itstarted a frenzy, and the crowd screamed with renewed zeal, snapping away with their camera phones.

Seething,Ishoved at his chest.Icould have saved my energy.Axelhad already let go because he had accomplished what he set out to do.Excitablepeople narratedAxel’spublic display on their live feeds.

Mysmile was plastic due to the spectators, but the venom dripping from my voice was real. “You’resuch an asshole.Ididn’t agree to kiss you in public.”

Fucktrying to get insideAxel’shead.Iwas ready to make a run for it.Theplan was nixed whenAxelthrew his arm around my shoulders to keep me latched to his side while walking us forward. “No, but you did agree to come to a rave with me.Youhaven’t held up your end of the deal. So, the next time you try going back on your word,I’llpull the scarf down before kissing you in front of this crowd.”

Thatshut me up.Iforgot about my saving grace.Thescarf, paired with my glasses, likely obstructed the photos taken.

Axel’smenacing warning was still crystal clear.Hecould use his celebrity status and fans to ruin my life with only one kiss.Ihad to play ball and keep him on an even keel untilIwas out of his reach.

Keepingmy head down,Iprayed no one would get a good shot of my face.Newbouts of wild screams ensued overAxel’spresence.Confusedand disoriented,Iheld my hand over my ear as the piercing shrills of the hundreds of people intensified.

Thepack advanced on us, despite the fortified body walls created by the venue security.Theycould barely restrain the masses blocking the way.Uponhearing the commotion, the patrons standing in line at the main entrance flocked to the back.Peopleswarmed us, not allowing us to get through.Cameraswith flashes went off from every direction as the crowd zeroed in like mindless zombies.Suddenly, trampling to death overruled my fear of what my family might think if they saw me hanging fromAxel’sarms.Ihad never seen such a spectacle.

Righton cue, a man with a large phone in hand broke through the barrier of security guards.Hethrust his phone in my face in his missed attempt to take a close-up photo.

“Whatthe—”Ijumped when a flash went off, nearly blinding me.

“WATCHIT,”Axelroared at the man, whacking the phone away so remorselessly it tumbled out of his hand.Thephone met its maker when it landed on the concrete and shattered into several pieces.

Muffledmurmurs echoed throughout the crowd following the aggressive display.Axelwasn’t known for losing his cool.Hewas supposedly a man of the people.

Istilled, too, fully expecting the public to lash out atAxelfor mistreating a fan.Nothingcould have prepared me for what happened instead.

Therewere no reprimanding words or ugly comments directed atAxel.Angryfanatics abruptly started shoving and berating the man instead, the one who had barely assaulted a supposed celebrity’s date.

Iturned my head from side to side, baffled.Oh,God.Axelsmashed someone’s phone into pieces, and they were cheering him on.Theywere publicly encouraging his aggression with positive reinforcement.

Iwasn’t the only one shocked by the turn of events.Momentsago,Axelused this platform to assert his dominance over me.Theadvantages of the unwarranted attention went sour for him within the snap of a finger.Hewas no longer amused about holding the threat of his celebrity status over my head.Axelcurled an arm around my shoulders and shoved everyone out of my way before they could make contact.

“Wherethe hell have you been?”Axelchewed out angrily.

IthoughtAxelwas speaking to me before finding three men jogging toward us from the right.Theyhad managed to weave in and out of the throng without my noticing until they were right beside me.Allthree wore black suits and sunglasses, with an unironic take onMeninBlackin their get-ups.

Theleader of the group—Ipresumed based on the hierarchy of him standing a few feet ahead of his comrades—nodded atAxel.Witholive skin and a bald head, he stood out from his fairer counterparts.Hewas also the tallest of the three, with a size rivalingAxel’s.

“Thisisn’t the usual day party crowd,”Axelsnapped at the man. “What’sgoing on?”

Theman squinted at his phone screen thoughtfully, all the while jostled side to side by the excitable crowd. “Seemsthe venue sold out on table service and tickets for this event.”
