“Alone?”Damonalways had a security team following him in case of stalkers.Ironic, wasn’t it? “Whereis your team?”

“Watchingover you,” he replied easily.

Ifrantically scouted the bedroom for men who might be hiding under our bed or in the bathroom.

Ofcourse, he knew whatIwas doing. “Don’tworry, baby.Iwouldn’t let a bunch of horny men inside our apartment or watch my wife on a security feed.Theyare stationed outside in case of a fire.”

Itmade good sense, butIcouldn’t shake the ominous feeling.WhywouldPariscallDamonafter what happened?

“Tellme again whyPariscalled you,”Ipressed.

“Hedidn’t.Someonefrom the hospital called.TheysaidParisasked for me.”

“So, you never spoke toParis?”

Somethingdidn’t add up here.Callit a wife’s intuition, and no,Iwasn’t being sarcastic.

“No…”Damontrailed off momentarily. “Whatthe hell?”

“Hello,Damon.”Iheard a different voice on the other end of the line.

Mystomach dropped at the sound of the familiar voice.

UncleDev,Rose’sfather.

“Mr.Ambani?”Damonconfirmed my suspicions. “Putthe gun down.”

Coldsweat broke out on my forehead.

Shit.Shit.Shit.

“Damon, you need to get the hell out of there,”Iwhispered.

ButDamononly spoke to the man in front of him. “Putthe gun down,Dev.Thisisn’t you.”

“Donot engage with him,Damon,”Iwarned. “Devis an emotional man.”Emotionalmen often make unstable decisions.

Ibanged at the post, trying to get the cuffs off me.Itwas futile.Devhad a gun, andIcouldn’t even call the police.

Despitemy advice,Damonspoke toDevwith kindness. “Youdon’t seem okay, man.Putthe gun down, and let’s talk about this calmly.Weboth know you aren’t going to shoot me in broad daylight and get away with it.”

“Idon’t care,”Devshouted, voice shaking.Itsounded like he had been drinking. “Youare the one who keeps getting away with it.I’mtired of it.Youdestroyed my family, yet nothing happened to you.I’mabout to change that, andIdon’t care what happens to me after.”

“Dammit,Damon.Don’ttry to be a hero right now.Thisman can’t be reasoned with if he already went through the trouble of procuring a gun.”Ibanged the cuffs against the post again.Ikicked it, too, hoping to break it.IfIcould make it to the front door,Icould yell for the security guards outside and tell them what was happening.Oneof them could call the police.

Damoncontinued to speak toDevin a soothing voice, refusing to believe this was a lost cause.Thephilanthropist in him was winning, wanting to help a devastated father instead of caring for his own life.

Iclosed my eyes, wishing this nightmare away.Thesame uselessnessIfelt years ago whenPapawas dying slammed through me.Iwas no longer that lost little girl, andIrefused to let yet another man who meant the world to me die whileIdid nothing.

“Thereis something you don’t know aboutDev,”Ispoke into the phone softly, hopingDamoncould hear me succinctly over the conversation withDev. “Yearsago, he had an affair with his sister-in-law, his brother’s wife,Sonia.”

IknewDamonwas listening despite coaxingDev, telling him everything would be alright.

“Theinvestigation was officially dropped today,”Icontinued. “Andclearly,Devhas lost his mind as a result.Becausethe product of his affair withSoniawasRayyan.Devbelieves you killed his son on top of seducing his only daughter.Devthinks you took both his children from him.”

“What?”Theshock was evident inDamon’svoice.Thiswas a buried family scandal only a few knew about.

“Whothe hell are you talking to?”Devbarked. “Hangup.”
