“Noreason.Comeon, let’s do some shots.”

Ineeded to distractRosebefore she read into my intentions and led the charge to the bar.Withintwo shots, she was tipsy, throwing me forlorn looks.Islipped away with excuses of using the restroom, leaving my brother and cousins in charge of keepingRosepreoccupied.

Iclimbed the grand staircases, stopping to scan the room from above.Poppywasn’t here.Ofcourse, the little antipathy veered off to somewhere secluded.Myphone dinged.

Sophie:Areyou at the party?

Damon:Yeah.

Sophie:Yoursurprise is waiting.

Irolled my eyes, regretting tellingSophieI’dbe here.Shewas merely a decent decoy if things went south.Sophie, one of the few neutral parties in the long-standingAmbani-Maxwellbattle, was an old friend of mine.Shewas also friends withRoseand, by extension, her cousins.

Weused to hook up, which later changed to a strictly platonic friendship, except for the one odd conversation last week.

“Ihave a surprise for you.”Multiplestudents glanced atSophieas she barged into the library and set her purse on my table, making no effort to lower her voice.

Iraised an eyebrow.

Sophieplaced two hands next to her mouth as if making a big announcement. “I’msetting up a one-night stand for you with the hottest woman on earth.”

Myeyes returned to my laptop.

Neverone to flail at the sight of rejection,Sophiecontinued with zest, “Thisgirl’s made of dreams.Considerit a graduation present for both of us.”

FinishingmyMBAwas hardly a cause for celebration.ThoughIusually ignoredSophie’santics, her wording gave me pause. “Howis setting me up a graduation present for you?”

Sophieshrugged. “I’mgoing to be there when it happens.Shewouldn’t have agreed to it otherwise.Thinkof it as hand-delivered merchandise, custom-made to your liking.”

Ishouldn’t be surprised by the proposition.Sophiewas sex-positive, always up for discovering new things in the bedroom.Evidently, voyeurism was the newest kink she unlocked.

“Plus,Ihave this theory about you thatI’mdying to test.Asa graduation present to myself,I’mgoing to find out ifI’mright.”

“Curiositykilled the cat.”

Sophiewas undeterred from her cause. “Ifthis girl doesn’t blow your mind,I’llpersonally fuck you to make up for it.”Shelooked me up and down. “Youknow what?I’llthrow in a free fuck for you regardless, as a last hurrah for old times’ sake.”

Sophiehad a comically deluded sense of self-worth. “Thankyou for the generosity,”Idrawled, pointedly swinging my eyes to the left and right.Girlswere discreetly taking my photo from phones hidden between their open books.Onegirl was “reading” her book upside down.Weboth knewIdidn’t need help in this department.

“Sarcasmisn’t a good color on you,Damon.Everyoneis over this crappy mood of yours.Youneed to get laid, but you think everyone is a social climber.Interestingstandards to have in a city likeNewYork, by the way,” she said sardonically.

Icouldn’t argue with the statement.Itwas no surpriseSophieand the others noticed my detached attitude.Mymood was worsening by the day.

“Ifound you a woman willing to fuck you without knowing who you are to satisfy your celebrity chaser discrimination.Iomitted your name and sent her your health screening, andIjust received hers.Sheis clean, by the way.So, you don’t have to do a thing other than show up.”Sophieflipped her hair haughtily as if doing me the biggest favor. “You’rewelcome.”

Iscoffed.ThiswasSophie’sway of “fixing me,” though she needn’t bother.IfItold her what was really wrong, hell would break loose.

“Sonext week?” she followed up expectantly.

“Notinterested.”Istarted typing an email.

“Fine.MaybeI’llspring it on you becauseIthink you’ll fall at my feet once you see her.”

Idoubt it. “Bye,Sophie.”Andleave me alone to wallow in my forever persistent bad mood.
