Itilted my head, not understanding the insinuation.

“Ifmy father cheated on my mother, then married his mistress months after her death,Iwouldn’t be able to stand either of them, let alone live under the same roof,” he explained with unwavering conviction. “Isn'tthat why you packed your bags?"

Istared at hisAdam’sapple.

Damonskimmed over the bag on my bed, then spotted the backpack containing my laptop and charger. "Iunderstand your reasons, butIdon’t like that you were going to leave without telling me the destination.Idon’t like you running from me."

“Couldn’trun even ifIwanted to.Theboard sent me multiple warnings about how the security measures at my old apartment weren’t good enough.Itjustified their paranoia when someone broke into my old place.”

Afaint flicker of tension crossedDamon’sface, but the expression cleared beforeIcould read into it.

“Iwas thinking of going away whileIlook for a new place.ButIdon’t have a security detail, so that’s out.”

"Wherewould you go if you had a team?"

"LasVegas."

“That'ssurprising.”

“Why?”

“Mostpeople are generally drunk and happy inVegas.”Whenhe noticed my scowl,Damonclucked his tongue. “Don’tworry,LittleSpawn. It’sthe holidays. There’llalso be plenty of degenerates gambling away their life savings this time of the year.Vegaswill be morose."

“Youthink?”Iasked hopefully.

Damonchuckled. “Nevermind.WhyLasVegas?”

“Sophieis inVegas.”

Hisjaw ticked.IknewDamonthrewSophieout of the room the first night we were together and adding fuel to the fire wasn't my intention.

“I’mnot interested inSophie,”Iquickly added, taken aback thatIwas offering him an explanation. “Ineed to ask her a few questions.”Ineeded to clearDamon’sname.

“Whatabout?”

“Ican’t tell you. It’sbetween her and me.”

Damongave me a tight smile, then grabbed the duffel bag off the bed. "Let'sgo."

Istared at him blankly. “Where?"

"Ithought we were going toVegas," he spoke like the answer was obvious.

Ascoff fizzed in my chest at his bold haste. “Youcan’t come toVegaswith me.”

"Ifwe leave now, we can still enjoy most of the day with the time difference."Damonhardly acknowledged my refusal, busy picking out a coat from my closet, the same bomber jacket he had left me with.

“You…”Youbelong toRosewas on the tip of my tongue.

Orat leastRosebelieved thatDamonbelonged to her.Someof her texts were challenging to read, outright confessing her feelings to him.Ididn’t know if anything happened between them, but after this morning, perhaps illusion was better than reality.

Iwasn’t sure how to articulate the thought and went with, “Youcome toVegaswith me, and paparazzi will take a million pictures of us together."

"Paparazzionly take pictures of me inNewYorkbecause they knowIlive here.Vegasis different, especially onNewYear's.Theplace is crawling with celebrities.Theywon't notice me or if we are together."

"Orpictures of us will be the headline tomorrow, and we'll be jobless the day after."

Damondisregarded the concern.Hedraped the giant jacket over my shoulders, humming appreciatively at the sight of me swimming in it.
