“Yeah. He was hired to grab someone named Alex. Thought it was a guy. So he accepted. Turned out it was my Ma. But he couldn’t back out on it because it was a real sonofabitch who hired him.”

“Oh, my God. Who?”

“Big time trafficker back in the day. A actually lives in the house he used to live in,” I added.

“This town is insane,” I said, shaking my head.

“Lotta history,” Junior agreed.

“How’d they end up together if he kidnapped her?”

“Well, Ma was… a pill. My old man liked that. He had to hold onto her for a while, so feelings grew, I guess. Then when it was time to hand her over, he couldn’t. Came up with a plan. Actually, that story is too fucking complicated and includes Jstorm and Wolf.”

“You can’t just drop names like Jstorm and Wolf and not explain.”

“Remember how I said we got the bikers in town?”

“Yeah…”

“Wolf is a biker. Jstorm is part of that paramilitary organization I mentioned. Anyway, their story kinda coincided with my mom and dad’s story. Ended up in this big clusterfuck that involved a bomb and shit like that. Some day, when you know more about the town’s history, I will give you that whole story.”

Some day.

Because he planned to be in my life?

Of course he planned on being in my life, I reminded myself with an eye roll.He liked being in my coffee shop.

And that was all it was.

It was silly to even entertain any other meaning for a second.

We finished driving around and made it back to the loft, where I carefully went through my clothes, rolling them so they didn’t wrinkle, and picking out something to wear to the meeting.

By the time I came back out from the bedroom area, Junior had connected my gaming console to the TV, and the controller and headset were sitting there waiting for me.

“Thank you,” I said, head tipped to the side as I looked at him.

“Prolly gonna be here a bit. Might as well have your shit all set up.”

He was brushing it off, but it was nice. Thoughtful, for someone who was definitely not the warm and squishy type.

“What are you in the mood for?” he asked, walking toward his desk to retrieve his phone.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Lunch,” he said, swiping at his screen.

“Oh, ah… anything. I usually just pound two coffees in a row to stave off the hunger pangs,” I admitted, getting raised brows from him.

“Yeah, no,” he said. “Wraps? Tacos?”

“I mean… anyone who says no to tacos is a sociopath,” I said, getting a little chuckle out of him.

“Regular? Bean? Those fake meat crumble things? What?” he asked, looking up to find me watching him. “I have some cousins who don’t eat meat. Figure it’s rude to assume.”

“Whatever you order is fine. I like just about anything. I’m gonna go get dressed while you order,” I said, getting a nod from him as I walked off.

“Crap,” I whispered to my reflection as I closed myself in the bathroom with my clothes and bag of bath stuff. “I like him,” I added, sighing hard.
