To that, Junior rolled his eyes and gestured toward me in aGo ahead and handle this one.

“I would normally object to being referred to as a damsel in distress,” I admitted. “But just this once, I think the title suits me pretty well.”

“Plus, free coffee,” Barry said.

“You’ll pay,” Junior said.

“But, we’re on a protection detail.”

“You’ll be sitting there not doing jackshit,” Junior corrected. “And you can afford it,” he added.

“Fine,” Barry said. “But I still think we should go to pick out ornaments after work. It’s getting late not to be decorated.”

“He doesn’t have a tree yet,” I reminded him, smiling at Junior as he sent a long-suffering look in my direction.

“Why?” he asked, tone pained.

“Because it’s fun,” I told him as Barry took the bait.

Before we knew it, he was discussing all the research he’d done on Christmas tree farms. Apparently, there were a few in Jersey. But in Barry’s personal opinion, you had to trek somewhere colder and snowier to pick up a tree. For the ambiance. Never mind the logistical difficulties of bringing a tree home from Vermont. And, you know, the six-plus hour drive with Junior and Barry bickering in the car.

I could just picture it, Barry turning on the Christmas music and belting it out. Junior turning it down and grumbling about his singing.

“Let me guess,” Junior said as we finished eating and Barry made a show of finishing the last of his drink. “You can’t drive home tonight.”

“And you can’t drive me home because you need to protect our lady friend.”

Junior sighed.

“Make the couch up,” he said, then turned and walked away.

“He had a long day of work,” Barry said, as if apologizing for Junior’s behavior, even though it was toward him and not me.

“I think he sort of sees you as a younger brother,” I told Barry, watching as his chest puffed up at that. “So, he has to do that annoyed older brother thing to you.”

“That’s exactly it,” Barry said, walking away to make up the couch with a pep in his step.

Junior was up in his loft again, so I took a change of clothes into the bathroom and took a shower before making my way to bed.

I lay there, listening to the reruns on the TV in the living room, and Junior’s footsteps across the loft for a while until, finally, I fell asleep waiting.

I woke up with him though, both of us curled up facing each other, his warmth chasing away the chill in the loft. I told myself the warmth was the only reason I wiggled a little closer.

I realized I wasn’t the only one awake when his body shifted, moving over mine, his weight pressing me into the mattress as his lips claimed mine.

My arms and legs went around him as his lips pressed deeper, as the feel of him overtook me completely.

His hardness was pressed against my core and I couldn’t stop myself from writhing against it, against him, my little whimper muffled by his lips.

“Feel how fucking hard you got me?” Junior groaned in my ear as he ground down against me.

My teeth nipped his lower lip hard enough to drag a rumbling sound out of him.

But then he was moving away from me, sliding down my body and under the covers.

His fingers snagged my pants and panties, drawing them down my legs until he could reach for my bare thighs, spreading them wide for him on the mattress.

Anticipation sizzled through me as his lips met the inside of my knee, then moved upward. Glacially. Like he had all the time in the world. Like I wasn’t dying to feel him where I needed him most.
