“Got it.”

“Jensen,” Ray commanded as only the general could. “Get men to the airports and searching for whatever car they might be in.”

Derek was stunned by Ray’s quick reaction and show of support for Ellery. She’d ruined his wedding day and upset his beloved bride, but Ray would still be there for her because he loved Derek.

Derek had been gone for eight months, but his family would never turn their backs on him, or the woman he loved, no matter what.

He pushed the call button on Ellery’s number again, praying she’d answer.

Nothing.

“Let’s go find her,” Macey said. Her tone was resolute and Derek’s respect for his new sister-in-law increased as she put Ellery above her own ruined day without hesitation. Macey grabbed the train of her wedding dress and hurried for the door.

Ray jogged after his wife, and they all trailed after them. Macey could run fast in those heels, and she beat them all to the garage. Everybody started climbing into high-performance race cars. Derek jumped in the car closest to the garage exit—his dad’s black Lamborghini Aventador.

The passenger door opened, and his dad slid in. “Let’s go.”

Derek peeled out of the garage, leading the way. They raced down the hill and through the village. Ray’s and Jensen’s men held traffic and pedestrians out of the way.

Derek pushed that Lamborghini to its top speed of three hundred and fifty kilometers per hour. Some of his family were behind him, and some had headed the other direction toward the valley’s southern exit.

A sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach said Ellery was in trouble. Where was she? Was she hurting? Scared? Not trusting he loved her and would come for her?

“You think it’s the Rindlesbachers?” he asked his dad.

“I think they’re behind it, but I would imagine they’re too smart to risk exposing themselves. Unless they’re getting more desperate. Now that we know Henry is working with them or is their pawn, maybe they’re ready to show their hand.”

Derek nodded. Their manipulations were maddening, but he feared they weren’t simply insane, but geniuses with a plan nobody would understand until it was too late. The fact that they were manipulating the prime minister was terrifying in and of itself.

Right now, only Ellery mattered to him. They could deal with the downfall of the kingdom when she was safe in his arms.

Derek raced through the valley and hit the canyon road. He had to slow his speed to manipulate the tight curves.

His phone rang. Please let it be Ellery. His dad grabbed it and pushed the speaker button so he could focus on driving “Yes?”

“The guard sent her with a black Volvo, a blond man driving it. I suspect it’s Treven Rindlesbacher.” Ray spoke quickly, controlled. “We have a barrier stopping everything exiting the canyon toward Traverse. The guards spotted a car of that description, but it turned around before they intercepted and is speeding back our way. They’re following it, but he’s got a good head start on them. Hopefully he won’t take any of the side roads. If we see him, we need to form a roadblock quick. If not, we’ll have to send search parties up each of the canyon roads until we flush him out.”

Derek’s stomach churned more and more. Was it really Treven? What would that scum do to Ellery? What did he and his parents want with her? The man had murdered Jane Presley on a dare and spent five years in prison for it. He was a wild card.

“We all know William and Naomi are the brains and Treven’s just a wild, murderous idiot,” Ray said. “Be careful. Who knows how he’ll react.”

“Okay.” His dad moved his finger to press end on the phone.

Derek saw a glint of black hurtling their way. “He’s coming, Ray.”

“Roadblock. Now!”

“Do it,” his dad agreed.

Derek was already pulling to the left. He skidded the car into a turn and slammed it into park, ripping the brake up. Ray and Macey were right next to him in a Bugatti Chiron.

“Dad, get out,” Derek demanded.

That car was coming fast. Derek threw his door open and grabbed his dad’s arm. “This way.”

His dad scrambled across the gear shift and with him out the driver’s side door. There was a drop-off to the left and a river and a steep incline to the right. He saw Ray carrying Macey out of the Bugatti in her wedding dress toward the incline. Would any of them make it? Was Treven crazy enough to try to plow through those cars, or would he stop and turn around again, try to hide up one of the side roads?

As Derek ran for the incline with his dad on his heels, other police and military vehicles were pulling up behind the roadblock.
