Malik had to try the simplest and hopefully most solid plan. It had just come to him, and he hoped it was inspired from above.

Henry was the wildcard. Malik prayed desperately the prime minister wasn’t loyal to William and wouldn’t say something intentionally to rat Malik out, tip off William, and get Sophie and her family killed. Any of the three men could say something inadvertently or in surprise that could write Sophie’s death sentence.

“All right.” The guard hurried into the closest office as Malik stopped ten meters from his father’s office with the other guard by his side.

“How can we help, sir?” the younger-looking guard asked.

“Please just stand by and don’t make any sound. The prime minister has a recording device on. I’ll need you after …”

If they survived, he’d have them help take out the mercenaries in the helicopter and then fly to Wengen.

“Actually, get ahold of Chief Jensen. Get him to the castle with as many men as he can bring in quietly.” But they couldn’t wait for Jensen from the city or Lieutenant Cordon from the military facility. Chad had said they were getting more men together in the morning. If only Ray … but he was gone on his honeymoon, and Curtis couldn’t get here quick enough. “Please find some trusted men here, at the gates, or in Greenville, and wake up Derek and get him down here. Meet back here as quickly and quietly as possible.”

“All right, sir.” The man took off down the hallway, yanking his cell phone out as he went.

The other guard dashed out of T’s office with a clipboard, a sheath of paper on it, and a pen.

“Perfect. Thank you.”

Three minutes and ten seconds. No time to waste.

Malik wrote as quick and legible as he could on the paper. He prayed again that Henry wouldn’t rat them out and he wasn’t signing Sophie’s death sentence. What was the right choice? All he knew was he couldn’t let his dad, T, and Henry die.

“Please stay right here and don’t speak until we come back out.”

The guy nodded.

Malik hurried across the hallway and shoved open the door. The three men all startled and stared at him. Henry’s brow furrowed in confusion.

“I thought you were chasing some beauty across Switzerland,” T teased, all smiles and teasing like usual, but his blue eyes were wary. He knew how out of whack everything was, and obviously Henry had been spreading William’s lies.

“Malik?” His dad stood and started toward him. His blue eyes were solemn but full of a fatherly protectiveness that made Malik’s heart swell.

Malik held up the paper, hoping they could read it clearly.

The bag on my shoulder is a bomb. Keep talking normally and follow my lead.

“I was.” Malik chuckled, he hoped easily. Where was the recording device? His gaze swept over Henry. Of course nothing obvious stood out. Malik walked toward the balcony exit, holding the paper for all of them to see.

Every one of their eyes was wide, their mouths slack. His dad froze, but T touched the burn marks on his face. He’d already healed from one awful explosion. Malik had never seen T look so serious. Even after his accident, he’d been joking and trying to ease their worries.

“Of course the lady in question was smoking hot,” he continued, sliding the bag off his shoulder and placing it carefully by the exterior wall. The bomb should make a terrific explosion here, and he could only pray William’s guards would believe he’d accomplished his mission.

A glance at his watch. One minute and twenty-two seconds.

He flipped to a clean paper and wrote quickly.

“Knowing you, my charming brother, I’m sure she was gorgeous,” T said, his voice only slightly off.

Bomb going off in 1 minute. Henry, be ready to throw the recording device back into the room.

They all scanned the note. Henry jolted back. Both T and his dad turned to stare at the prime minister.

“You and Chad are so suave. You get all the women,” T said.

Malik gestured quickly for them to go to the door, setting his clipboard down.

“You know it, big brother. If only your face wasn’t disfigured. So terribly sorry.”
