Malik followed the small crowd on stiff legs, carrying Sunny to the rear door of a white Porsche Cayenne. Chad held the door for Sophie, and she thanked him as she slipped inside. Her mum went around to the other side and her dad helped her in, then climbed into the front passenger seat.

Sophie held up her hands for her daughter. Malik bent down and settled the darling girl on Sophie’s lap.

“Thank you,” she murmured, staring at him with those deep-brown eyes he loved. “For everything.”

“Of course.” He smiled, racking his brain for some smooth, charming comment or lead-in to how soon he could see her again.

The car started, and he caught Chad’s glare in the rearview. They’d both agreed that Sophie had to decide. What if she chose Chad?

Malik straightened out of the vehicle, holding onto the door. “I’ll see you later?”

“If you’re lucky.” Her smile was so sweet and appealing he was suddenly feeling very lucky.

“Luck is my middle name.”

She laughed. Her parents each smiled, and Chad shot him a dirty look.

“Someday soon, I hope you’ll share my last name.” It might have been too bold and too quick. It definitely crossed the lines of letting Sophie decide. He waited, hoping and praying for a positive response.

Her smile broadened even more. “If you’re lucky.”

He chuckled, stepped back, and shut the door. Maybe there was hope. Though, unfortunately, she was with Chad right now. On assignment. He hated that.

Malik watched them drive away.

Derek and Tristan stepped up next to him.

“Well, that was a letdown,” Derek muttered. “The most charming prince can’t even get a kiss of gratitude from the beautiful lady he rescued.”

“I’m a little short on charm,” Malik admitted. “Too tired.”

“Well, Chad’s not too tired,” Derek said. “I can tell you that.”

Malik’s gut clenched. “I wanted to beg you to assign me to drive them home,” he said to Tristan.

“I didn’t know how to smoothly make that switch without Chad calling me out,” T said. “My apologies.”

“It’s all right. It’ll work out.”

Would it?

“We all love Chad like a brother, but he’s not the right one for Sophie Pederson.” Derek’s piercing blue eyes studied him. “You are, Malik.”

“Thanks. That means a lot.” He gave his twin a tired smile. Especially as his brother didn’t know the true story of why Sophie had dumped him six years ago.

“Boys!” Their dad burst into the garage, grinning widely, and clasped each of them in a tight hug.

They walked into the kitchens to grab some food, filling each other in on details of what had happened from each of their points of view.

Malik found the angles intriguing, enjoyed the time with his dad and brothers, and he had a lot to share himself. He ate and attempted to relax. All he really wanted to do was jump in the Bugatti Veyron, their fastest car, and chase after Sophie.

Chapter Fifteen

Sophie fell asleep on the drive home, cuddling her Sunny. They made it to her house as the sun rose. Despite her dad’s comment about wanting to sleep in his own bed, her parents decided they’d stay with her for a couple days. They seemed as shaken by almost losing her and Sunny as she was by almost losing them and Sunny and Malik.

Ah, Malik.

Chad escorted her into the house. Some policemen had checked the home thoroughly and asked her permission to install security cameras in the main areas and exterior. She had given it, and they had set to work.
