She silently lectured herself for judging this man before she’d even met him. Katie needed to remember that he was an uncle, not a father.

This wasn’t his choice, and that’s why she was here. To help.

At least he’d cared that much, she thought, trying to change her attitude.

To her surprise, Stella knocked only once before letting herself inside the house. Katie followed suit, shutting the door behind her.

Looking around, she noted the inside appeared as lacking as the outside. It was white, clean, and organized. It was as if the entire house was an office space that was hardly ever used. There was not one sign that a child had been residing here for any amount of time, let alone days.

Yikes.

Judgment crept back in when Stella interrupted her growing irritation.

“Ah, General Axur. A pleasure to meet you. We came as quickly as we could.”

Katie turned. Her jaw dropped.

Before her stood a tall, devilishly handsome man with gorgeous amber eyes that popped against his slate-blue skin that was tightly pulled against his defined muscles. His indigo hair was cut fine and straight-edged. He was a delicious sight and not at all what she had pictured.

Katie stuck out her hand to introduce herself. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.

THREE

AXUR

“Hello, I’m Katie,” the blonde human female said with an award-winning smile.

Axur felt his groin tighten, not expecting a nanny to be so young … or attractive. He stuck out his hand in return for her extended one.

“Hello. I’m General Axur.”

He turned his focus back on the purple-haired being he assumed was in charge. He could tell from her voice that she’d been the person he’d spoken to when he called that morning.

“I’m glad you were able to come as quickly as you have.”

“Of course. You said it was urgent, so here we are.”

“Please, this way. Come with me to my office. We can discuss everything there.”

Axur gestured to the one room that had a door partially open.

He noticed that the blonde was still smiling as she followed the other into the room. She seemed warm enough. Hopefully, that would suit Ayla just fine.

Axur sat behind at his desk and had the other two sit in the guest seats across from him. The purple-haired older woman pulled out paperwork.

“As I said earlier, I’m Stella Sabara, one of the placers for our agency. This is Katie, and I handpicked her for your specific situation.”

“I’m happy to be here and of service to you,” Katie said softly and sincerely. Axur nodded quickly at her but said nothing in return.

He noticed her smile slip a bit. He brushed it off and looked again at Stella.

“So, what do we need to cover in order to make this work today?” He knew his tone was to the point, but this needed to be done quickly and efficiently.

Stella finished sorting her papers and gave the stack to him.

“These are all guidelines for our establishment and Katie’s contract for you. You just need to initial and sign, and I’ll take care of the rest.”

“Clear enough.” He pulled out a pen to sign, but Stella interrupted.
