There’s a tense beat when I’m not sure if she’ll return my energy.

But predictably, she replies, “Oh my God! Honey! It’s so good to see you!”

We cling to each other for a few seconds as I try to maneuver us away from the bouncers and further into the club. To their credit, the girls around us are either too drunk or too chilled to care about my sudden appearance. In fact, as soon as I break free of the first girl, another is dragging me by the hand and leading me back to the dance floor.

I risk a glance over my shoulder. The scarred man is looking at me, clearly a little confused. As if he’s trying to figure out if I’m the same person as before. I step up my pace.

Before I can be fully enticed into joining them on the dance floor, I slip away from the group of girls with claims of buying another round of drinks.

“Don’t run,” Eda says in my ear as I slow down a little. “Low profile, remember. You’re in a club, having a good time.”

I let my shoulders relax and begin swaying my hips in time with the music as I walk. Moving as subtly as I can toward the exit. Trying, with every ounce of my being, to pretend I belong here.

Even though I don’t.

“I know you killed someone, Roisin.”

A shudder runs down my spine. No. I can’t think about that right now.

“How far are you from the door?” Eda prompts.

“Gimme, like, two minutes?” I say, putting a finger in my other ear and beginning to hurry a little. Hopefully, it comes across as if I’m about to meet up with a friend outside.

The door is only a few steps away now. In just a few seconds, I’ll be able to put this nightmare behind me.

The bouncer who let us in earlier offers me a smile as he opens the door for me. I try to smile back convincingly, but I’m almost certain it doesn’t reach my eyes.

Just one more step.

Fresh air hits my face, and I almost cry in relief.

In front of me, a limo with blacked-out windows waits for me, just as Eda said.

“Okay,” I say breathily down the phone. “Almost there.”

“Get straight into the passenger seat,” Eda instructs.

My hand reaches out for the handle-

But someone grabs my other.

I spin around in fright to see the same man who grabbed me before.

“Going somewhere, Roisin Maguire?” he purrs as he yanks me away from the limo.

“Roisin! What’s happening?” Eda shouts through the loudspeaker.

The man pulls me closer still. “I’ll be taking that.” He snatches the phone from my hand and brings it to his ear. “Well, if it isn’t Eda Romero. Be a doll and make your driver stand down.”

I glance over my shoulder to see that the limo driver has silently ducked behind the hood and is currently aiming a handgun at my attacker. The bulging barrel suggests a silencer, for all the good it will do anyone.

After a moment, the driver touches his earpiece, and the firearm is concealed.

“Good.” My attacker pockets my phone and turns his attention to me. “I recommend that you don’t struggle.”

My hand is already on his arm, trying to free myself from his grip. Like hell I’m not going to struggle!

He’s much stronger than me, quickly restraining my other arm, too.
