I turn to the driver expectantly.

Only to be met with a cloth to my face. A strong, bitter smell fills my nose.

Then everything goes black.

Chapter Thirty-One

Arnie

It feels like I’m waking up from a three-day-long hangover.

The lights above me seem to beam directly into my retinas every time I try to open my eyes. I grunt as I try to push myself onto my front.

“Good, you’re up.”

It takes another thirty seconds for me to identify where the voice came from. But when I do, I struggle not to roll my eyes.

“I take it Jack didn’t trust me?” I mutter to the blonde sitting at the desk. Her fashionable black clothes stand in stark contrast to my own bloodied shirt.

I sit up from what I now realize is a worn-down couch. The room is small, with minimal lighting, despite how bright it seemed when I first woke up. Faintly, I can still smell the telltale stale stench of alcohol that tells me we’re still atOnyx.

“On the contrary,” Kate St. Michael responds with a smirk. “It’s me who doesn’t trust you.”

Jack Duffy’s cousin and I have met on several occasions—none of which have particularly cemented any kind of friendship.

“Are you still mad about that time in Queens?” I grunt as I stretch out my neck.

Kate doesn’t bother looking at me when she responds. “I’m still mad at you forLong Island.”

“It was a lucky shot,” I attempt to defend myself, knowing how unlikely it is that she’ll agree with me. In truth, I know she’s only bitter because I was able to sneak up on her, and it’s a rare thing to see Kate St. Michael caught off guard.

“I’m glad that blow to the head didn’t ruin your charming personality,” Kate snaps back sarcastically.

Pain throbs through my brain as I try to recall the last thing I remember before passing out.

I was dancing atOnyx, things were going well, Roisin was smiling—

Roisin.

Where is Roisin?

Kate must sense the shift in the room’s temperature as the realization floods me with dread. “You remember now?”

“What happened? Where is she?” I hiss in an attempt to mask my desperation.

“Working on it,” Kate replies as she types in another command on the computer.

I take in the room once again as my mind begins to explore escape routes. “Where are we?”

“Security.Onyxis supposed to have a state-of-the-art CCTV system, but so far, I’ve not been too impressed,” she comments as she continues to tap on the keyboard.

“I’ll be sure to let the Costas know,” I say as I pull up a chair next to her.

After a few more minutes of silence, in which Kate flicks through what must be two dozen angles of the club itself, she finds what she’s looking for.

“There!” she says triumphantly, pointing at the screen. “That’s when I went to the bathroom.”

I close my eyes in frustration. “Is this some kind of joke?”
