“Look who’s being sarcastic now, St. Michael.”

“If they’re keeping Roisin anywhere, it’ll be the first floor,” Kate continues, ignoring me entirely. “We need to find a staircase.”

I gesture to the other side of the room. “Out that door and to the left.”

“So you did study my map.”

“I skimmed it,” I admit as I begin to stand.

“Wait.” Kate puts her arm to stop me, holding deathly still. “Someone’s coming.”

Lo and behold, a few seconds later, a man emerges from the door we were planning to use. If it’s part of his rotation through the house, it’s going to make it so much more difficult to slip on by.

A plan is already beginning to take form in my head when Kate moves. I’ll admit, she’s impressively silent as she glides through the shadows, hugging her cover and contorting herself into shapes I didn’t think were possible.

One minute, theBlack Coatis walking toward the patio door; the next, Kate is dragging his body back behind the couch.

“He dead?” I ask as she dumps the body at my feet.

“Shouldn’t be, why?”

I place my silencer on his forehead.

Snip.

Kate doesn’t even flinch. “Couldn’t you have done that someplace away from our exit?”

“I don’t go out the way I came in. If someone sees us, they’ll expect us to come back here. Our new friend will make sure of that.”

“So?”

“So, it’ll give us more time to find another exit.”

Kate doesn’t bother trying to hide her exasperation. “There isn’t another exit.”

“Third-floor balcony.”

“That’s a long way down,” she counters.

“Not if the first floor is partially submerged.”

She looks like she’s about to respond, then closes her mouth again. Taking a deep breath. “Has anyone ever told you you’re an absolute bastard?”

“On occasion.”

“Anything else you forgot to tell me? You figure out where they’re keeping Roisin?”

“No,” I say bitterly. “We should each take a wing and meet back in the middle.”

“East used to be a part of the old building. If there were ever any creepy-ass dungeons or holding rooms, they’d be there,” Kate suggests.

But I’m already shaking my head. “I’d rather be thorough.”

“Okay, but don’t get mad when I find her before you,” Kate says as she begins to take off.

“Meet at the entrance hall on the hour, or else I’ll leave you behind,” I call after her.

“Gee, what a gentleman.”
