I ignore it to the best of my ability as I carry her, bridal style, through the entrance of my home.

The irony isn’t entirely lost on me.

A part of me wonders how Roisin would react if she knew that we were engaged. But judging by our first interaction, my money is on “poorly”.

“I’ve put her in the sunflower room, sir,” Angus says from across the entrance hall.

I nod as he gestures to me to follow him.

Our footsteps echo through the old house as we make our way down the corridor. Angus leads us into one of our larger rooms, the bedcovers already pulled back so I can set her down more easily.

When I step back, Angus approaches my side.

We stand there a moment, watching her breathe steadily.

Roisin looks almost peaceful.

“How much longer?”

I do the math in my head. “The ketamine should have worn off about twenty minutes ago.”

Angus frowns and presses the back of his hand to her forehead. “She’s out cold.”

“Maybe it’s the alcohol?” I suggest.

“How much did she drink?”

“I don’t know.”

He takes a dainty sniff and grimaces. “I’ll get her something warmer to wear.”

Angus turns away and I take the opportunity to examine her more closely myself.

Should I be worried? I didn’t think about how much alcohol she might have had before I injected her. I was more concerned with getting out of Dodge without a warrant for my arrest.

Yet now, I can’t help the gnawing feeling in my stomach. Like I’ve done something wrong. Aside from, you know, drugging and kidnapping her.

Before I realize I’m doing it, my hand grazes her cheek, stroking the soft skin.

“Sir?”

I turn with a start to find Angus lingering by the door.

“I hope I’m not speaking out of term when I say this…” He trails off.

I offer him a tired smile. “How long have we known each other?”

“A lot has changed since you were a boy, sir,” he points out.

“Please, Angus.” I value his thoughts, a bit more when they aren’t soaked in sarcasm. But Angus has served the family for years, and he’s earned a bit of irreverence.

“She seems to be in severe distress…” he begins carefully. “I would hate for anything to compromise her while she’s in such a fragile state.”

I can’t take my eyes off her peaceful face. It’s like her breathing has me entirely transfixed.

“What are you saying?”

“Perhaps it would be best that I attend to her?”
