She’s fast becoming a weakness I don’t want to rid myself of. And that’s a problem forme.

Weakness means vulnerability, and I know better than anyone how to exploit a vulnerability.

The second rule, and perhaps the most devastating, is that I had sex in mycar. There’s not a cleaner in a hundred-mile radius that I would trust to take care of my Lamborghini, and I don’t see us taking a road trip any time soon.

I splash my face with the running water to try and soothe my frustration. It’s almost 2 A.M., and although I usually prefer a night shift, it’s already been a long day. The blood on my clothes alone is a testament to that.

With one last deep sigh, I turn off the tap and head back into the garage.

Roisin is leaning against the door, worrying her bottom lip with no small amount of enthusiasm. When she hears the door open, she looks up at me.

“Hey.”

“You okay?” I ask as I make my way over to the driver’s side.

She looks down at her feet as I pass. “So about what just happened…”

“It’s been a long day. We both needed to release some tension,” I rationalize through my teeth. “It doesn’t need to mean anything, cara.”

“Right.”

My hand lingers on the handle of the door. That’s not what I wanted to say, but what choice do I have? We’ve only just met, and alliances aside, it’s not like she has my ring on her finger.

I glance up over the roof of the car to see her staring at me nervously.

“Hypothetically,” she starts slowly. “If I ever wanted it to mean something…”

“I’d tell you to reconsider.” I hide my face with the car door as I pull it up.

I barely hear her quiet response. “Why?”

“Because you don’t want this life, and you sure as hell don’t want me.”

“So is that what it’s going to be like when we’re married then?” Her voice becomes firmer and more irritated with every passing second. “We’ll just fuck whenever you need to release some tension?”

I snort. “If we ever make it down the aisle, I’ll let you know.”

“Arnie–”

“Listen, can we just go home?” I run my hand over my tired face. “This feels like a conversation we can have after a full twelve hours of sleep.”

Roisin’s expression darkens, opening her own door. “Fine.”

Silently, we both get in the car. The tension is palpable, and the roar of the engine does nothing to break through it, and the wait for the garage door to open is unbearable. Not half an hour ago, we sat in these same positions, pleasuring each other. And now…

I hit the gas, and we are launched back into the frigid night.

Despite the hour, the city is still brimming with traffic. It’s not until we cross back over the bridge that things start to ease up. Roisin is so quiet I assumed she’d fallen asleep once the stop-and-go traffic had eased off. But when I glance over at her, she’s staring blankly out the window.

I let out a sigh. “We’re almost back.”

She doesn’t respond.

“I’ll tell Angus to hold breakfast until late morning,” I continue, unperturbed by her stubbornness. “There’s no reason for us to be up early.”

“What’s that?” she says suddenly.

“I said there’s no reason for us to be up early.”
