“Oh, I…” I was hurt. He was definitely lying.

My words earlier had made him uncomfortable. It wasn’t too late to apologize.

“I’ll see you at the hospital then,” he said as he put his shirt on properly. “I’ll be late, but I’m sure you can understand my reason.”

“You could have just had your shower, you know?” I said softly.

“Thank you for the offer but I politely decline,” he replied.

“Fine then, be like that,” I sucked my teeth. “Be sure not to leave any of my doors open on your way out.”

He didn’t say anything and left as quiet as a dove.

“Idiot,” I cursed under my breath but it wasn’t directed at him; it was directed at me, “You could have just apologized.”

Bruce

Why again did I stay in bed? I should have left the moment I woke up. Was that the way she treated the rest of the men she spent her nights with? I still couldn’t believe that I had let my guard down. She looked so peaceful while she slept that I was captivated and unable to move an inch. If I knew she would have been so hostile seeing me next to her, I would have respected myself and left immediately.

What exactly was I expecting from the mistress of the second hill? Heck, she saw some men so insignificant that she couldn’t even remember what I used to look like, or my old name.

“Even treating me like some whore,” I murmured.

After going home to change, I made my way to the hospital. I was late. There was no need to worry as I was sure that she’d make an excuse for me. As I stepped through the hospital doors, every eye fell on me. Nine years ago, something like this wouldn’t have been possible. Tabitha was at the front desk talking to the nurses on duty. As she noticed me, she looked away.

“That will be all, ladies,” she said to them. “If you still have any issues let me or Alex know.”

“Yes, Dr. Hill,” they responded.

Tabitha gave me one more glance before leaving.

The silent treatment, huh?

This was fine. I wasn’t in the mood to talk to her either.

“Ladies, what seems to be the problem?” I asked them. “Did any of you make the head doctor upset?”

“No that’s not the case,” one of them answered. “She’s leaving for Zurich for a conference soon and just wanted to make sure that we have everything sorted out before she leaves.”

“Zurich?” I raised a brow.

Tabitha was going places beyond my reach now. I needed to up my game. I was proud of her, but if things went the way I had wanted in medical school, I would have been the one in her situation.

Lucky her.

My phone started to ring. It wasthemagain. They hardly called, and I hadn’t spoken to them since I had come to Richmond. I excused myself and went outside the building to answer the call.

“Hello?” I answered.

“Hey, Bruce, right?” the caller asked.

A male voice. Judging by how chirpy he sounded, he could have been late twenties. The voices changed with each call. The last time was an older man that spoke slowly.

“Yes that’s me,” I answered. “How may I help?”

“We just want to know if you were able to find Tabitha. Have you made contact with her?” he asked.

“I was able to,” I answered. “Is there any problems?”
