“I'm not sure,” was my honest response.

That was in the morning.

In the afternoon, I tried to talk to Bruce, but he didn't seem like he wanted to speak. Something was definitely on his mind. Luckily for him, he was able to escape each time I called because another patient demanded his attention or a colleague needed him to attend to something.

In my own company, I couldn't control one employee. It was comical, and honestly, I didn't find anything wrong with what was going on. But it felt like it was getting out of hand with the way he didn't want to respond. It annoyed me, to say the least.

“Dr. Jericho,” I called him, and he turned to look at me.

“When you're done for the day, I would like to see you in my office,” I said.

“All right, boss,” was his response.

I tried to focus on my own work while he did his. We walked past each other in the hallways; it felt like he wanted to tell me something but couldn't find the words.

“Out with it already. This isn't the time for you to act like you don't have control over things,” I said as I sank into my office chair.

The second thing happened. My phone started to ring, and it was from Shawn.

“What does he want now?” I groaned before answering. “Good evening; how may I help you?”

“Am I calling the right number?” he asked with disbelief.

I honestly couldn't care less and wanted him to tell me what he needed this time. I could already picture what he wanted.

“I know you're thinking that I'm here to talk to you about the hospital again; but unfortunately for you, I'm actually here to tell you to watch out,” he stated.

“I'm not going to lie; that was a surprising statement from you,” I remarked. “What exactly should I be watching out for?”

“I don't know. I think the man your mom has been looking for is in the city. They might have sent a spy or something to monitor you,” he advised. “Just be careful.”

“I appreciate the warning. Thank you,” I said.

“Anything for you,” he said before hanging up.

I shuddered at the thought of having that dog look out for me. But it wasn't so bad at the same time. I had yet to notice any strange thing. It would be Bruce's behavior after returning to Richmond. Was he still worried that I would tell everyone that he owned a smaller hospital or something?

I would never do that to him. Wait, did I tell Alex? No, I was just thinking about it. I'd just have to find out directly.

It didn't take too long, and he stepped into the office.

“You called for me,” he said as he approached the seat before me.

“Why does your voice sound so formal? It's weirding me out,” I complained.

“Isn't this how my voice has always sounded?” he asked while taking his seat.

“I'm not talking about the voices themselves. It's just like you're talking to me from an employee to an employer,” I explained.

“I understand that” his voice returned to normal. “So, that was enough to make you worried, Tabitha.”

“I wish that were all I was worried about,” I said, “but thank you for at least returning your tune to normal.”

“You're welcome?” He raised a brow.
