“If that's the case, we want to know why Bruce hasn't been made leader yet,” he explained. “We've heard reports about his work and how well he performs. So, it baffles us that you still haven't placed him in the post he was hired for.”

“That's because I believe he isn't ready,” I said. “I haven't had the time to evaluate him personally. I can't just go ahead and make him manager over a few reports.”

“It came to our knowledge that you weren't even paying attention to him when he started his work. When he took charge, you took offense to his method as well, acting like he was insubordinate to you,” Carol reported.

I turned to Alex, and he shook his head negatively. I trusted him; he wasn't the one who had told them. It was yet another thing that smelled fishy about the setup.

“So what now?” I asked.

“You're not going to deny the allegation?” Clark asked. He wasn't a standing surgeon but another man I respected. He seemed worried about something.

“It doesn't look like I have any opportunity to defend myself anyway,” I shrugged. “I might as well accept defeat.”

“Then call Bruce here,” Henry demanded.

I glared at him and he flinched, trembling in his seat.

“Alex,” I called.

“Yes, ma'am,” he said as he left to call for Bruce.

This was bad… extremely bad.

There was something they weren't telling. A quick glance on their face could tell me who was guilty and who wasn't. Cynthia had no idea why she was there. Clark seemed to know something, while Alex knew nothing. Henry and Carol were knees deep into whatever it was that was happening. A few moments later, Alex returned with Bruce.

Bruce glanced around the room, before settling his eyes on me.

“Good morning, everyone,” he greeted.

“Good morning,” they chorused in response.

Henry looked pleased with how Bruce had introduced himself to them, in contrast to my rude method.

“Is there something wrong?” Bruce asked as he made his way inside and sat on one of the empty seats.

Judging by the look on his face, he didn't know anyone in the room. His eyes only settled on me and Alex for support. Even at that, I was still bothered.

“You must be Dr Jericho,” Henry said. “We've heard so much about you and all you've done for this hospital ever since you joined. It's an honor to finally meet you.”

“The honor's all mine,” Bruce responded. “Is there anything I can do for you guys?”

Henry nodded and turned his attention to me. “Tabitha, we’ve evaluated your leadership style and that of Bruce. We feel he would be a better fit to be in your position.”

Bruce was shocked, as well as Alex and Cynthia.

“Excuse me?” I frowned.

“What are you talking about Henry?” Cynthia asked.

“What's going on?” Bruce asked Alex, who only shook his head negatively trying to make sense of the situation.

“It's exactly as I said,'' Henry said. “We're voting you out and plan to replace you with Bruce. This doesn't mean you would be fired totally from the hospital. You would be recognized as CEO, but Bruce will be in charge of everything.”

No, wait.

“Just during a short time of staying here, he has proven to be well behaved compared to you. He has given the staff opportunities to shine through their special skills and talents,” Carol started listing his achievements.

This couldn't be happening.
