Bless his heart. He thinks I’m the same girl he met in college who hung on his every word.

“Jason, you’re in my past. I have no desire to revisit whatever we had. Even if it's for friendship.”

I look at theCartierwatch on my wrist. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a meeting to get to.”

I teeter around him in my heels and walk out of the coffee shop and onto the street where the rain has picked up. I quickly climb into my chauffeured town car and settle into my seat.

I have been waiting years to do that. If the rest of my day goes that well I’ll probably spontaneously combust from joy.

“Where to, miss?” Jeremy, my driver asks.

“ToDeLisle.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He tips his driver’s hat at me in the rearview mirror, then drives off.

I’m sort of dreading what awaits me at work today. I’m semi-hyper ventilating in my seat when my phone starts to ring. I fish it out of my bag.

It’s my best friend, Haley.

“Are you at work yet?” she blurts as soon as I answer the phone.

“Good morning to you too.”

I can hear her roll her eyes over the phone. “Yes, yes, good morning. Are you at the office?”

“No, not yet. I am on my way in.”

“Big day, huh?”

“Yes, it is.”

“How areyou feeling?”

I’m about to answer when I hear a toddler screech in the background. “Is Maggie OK?”

“Ugh, she’s fine. These terrible twos just won’t come to an end. She wants ice cream for breakfast and I said no.”

I chuckle. “Your life is so glamorous.”

“Don’t even get me started. I mean, I love my daughter, but how is this my life now? I can’t believe I have to stay home with her all day while Fred gets to go out into the world and interact with actual adults.”

“Why are you complaining? He offered to stay home with Maggie but you wouldn’t let him.”

“Damn, I thought you would have forgotten that by now.”

“Never.” I laugh.

Haley laughs too. “Whatever. Enough about Maggie for now. Answer my question. How are you feeling? And don’t say fine. Being the control freak I know that you are, today can’t be easy.”

I pause for a bit then confess, “I am nervous…”

“I can imagine, but try to remember why you did this.”

“Yeah that’s not the problem. I don’t regret selling the company tothe Caldwell Consortium. It’s just that I have never had a boss, my entire professional life. Now all of a sudden I do. I’m not exactly sure how I will handle that.”

“I’m sure it’s going to be an adjustment, but just be patient. Of course, it’s going to be different from what you’re used to, but ultimately this was what you wanted. You soldDeLislebecause you wanted to focus on more creative endeavors and you wanted to concentrate on your love life. The fact that they asked you to come back as their Head Designer and Creative Director was the cherry on top of the cake you hadn’t anticipated.”

“You’re right, and speaking of my romantic life, you won’t believe who I just ran into.”
