She's married.

She has a life now that's separate from mine. Am I being fair to her by trying to rekindle something from our past?

But on the flip side, she deserves to know how I've always felt. If she's ever felt even a fraction of what I have, doesn't she deserve to explore that, to know what it might mean? We shared so many special moments, and this could be our chance to create new ones.

If she's happy in her marriage, she'll tell me. She can always say no and walk away.

But if there's even a glimmer of doubt in her mind, don't we owe it to each other to see what's there?

One wrong move could ruin any chance I might have with Lily, not just for romance, but even for friendship. But doing nothing, staying passive ... that might be the worst decision of all.

“Gah,” I ground out, slamming my hands down on the deck railing.

There's so much at stake.

Her feelings.

Her marriage.

Our friendship.

But if I never take the risk, I'll go to my death wondering, what if?

Being torn between my own desires, what I think is right for Lily, and the potential fallout of making a move is enough to drive me crazy.

Is sharing this broadcast a grand romantic gesture or a colossal mistake?

Can I live with the consequences of either choice? I know I have to do something … I can’t sit here and let her go through this alone.

She needs to know she means something to me.

She’s so damn special.

The sound of an incoming text has me leaping for my phone, in the hopes it’s Lily. That somehow, the universe has bound us together enough that she can feel my excitement wherever she is.

Instead, Quinn’s name is in the notification.

Heaving a sigh, I flick open my phone and read the text.

Heard some news you might find interesting. Give me a call, asap.

CHAPTER26

Lily

My heart races as I pace back and forth in our living room. This is where we’ve had the majority of our more heartfelt conversations over the past few years, so the setting just felt right.

I glance at the clock and a lump gets stuck in my throat.

Seth texted fifteen minutes ago to let me know he was on his way home. Based on his estimate, he’ll be here any minute.

Under my skin is a live wire of energy that’s causing me to shake from its intensity.

I don’t know how this conversation is going to go—but one thing’s for sure, things won’t be the same when it’s over.

For better or worse.

I laugh humorlessly at the irony in the thought.
