I itch the side of my temple, unsure what to say. Instead, I bend down and slide my feet into my shoes.

When I stand back up, I smile at her and press my palms to her shoulders. “I’m fine. Really.”

She steps into my space, wrapping her arms around my waist and placing her cheek on my chest. Together, we sigh in utter contentment.

It’s not that last night wasn’t the best fucking night of my life.

It’s just …

“Your heart is beating so fast,” she whispers, leaning back.

I swallow hard. “That’s what you do to me.”

She smiles at my words, but I can sense the energy in the room has shifted and it’s all my fault.

Dammit, I’m messing this up.

“Come on. We should get going,” I say, kissing the top of her head before I reach for the door handle.

She nods, straightening her shirt, then glancing around the room. My heart flutters when a nostalgic smile is hanging on her lips as she returns her gaze to me. I can see it in her eyes.

And yet for as happy as she appears, I know that if I’m not careful, she’s going to freak.

This was a big step.

Big. Huge.

Monu-fucking-mental.

I don’t want her to bolt. Not again.

I don’t think my heart could take it.

So, I suck in a deep breath, hoping to steady myself.

Her eyebrows crinkle in the middle, but I turn away, so she can’t see the storm brewing in my eyes or on my face.

Twisting back the lock, I open the door to find a folded piece of paper with my name written on it taped to the wood. I shoot Lily a questioning glance and unfold the paper.

The next time you decide to stage this whole place, then lock yourself in one of the rooms, at least have the courtesy to blow out the rest of the damn candles, you prick.

PS - Tell Lily I said hi.

Cal

I crumple the paper in my palm and shove it into my pocket.

“Everything okay?” Lily asks, placing a hand on my arm.

I nod. “Yeah, just Cal.”

Her eyes widen. “Did he—?”

I sigh, glancing toward the ceiling. “Possibly …probably.”

Color stains her cheeks. “Oh, god.”

“Exactly what he was hearing, I’m sure,” I tease, trying to lighten the mood.
