I watch her, my heart pounding like some kind of a war drum.

She always lets me open the door for her.

Thump, thump, thump.

Why didn’t she wait for me?

Thump, thump, thump.

Then, the insight comes rushing in. A reminder of what I wanted to do like some sort of inspired guidance from the Heavens.

I know how to fix this.

CHAPTER35

Lily

The soft thrumming of Nocté’s neon sign is louder than usual as I approach the lower entrance to the Upper Tier. Each luminous pulse sends a wave of unease down my spine.

Its ethereal glow should have been comforting, a blissful reminder of what London and I share, but instead, it echoes against the flickering doubts that are beginning to spring to my mind.

What happened this morning?

My gaze flits to the staff entrance and the sinking feeling plummets a bit further.

I blow out a puff of air, trying to shake it off.

I just need to get through this night … Then, I can sit London down and we can talk this all out. Whatever it is, I’m sure it’s no big deal.

My heartbeat stumbles a tiny bit.

The rest of the parking lot is filling with patrons eagerly waiting to get inside Nocté, completely unaware of the sexy new offering being presented to the Upper Tier tonight. I half-wonder what they’d think if they knew.

Would they wish they could go? Or would they be appalled?

A sharp gust of wind tugs at my hair, and I pull my spring coat tighter, trying to block out the chill and my growing sense of dread.

There’s still lots to do before the guests arrive.

I want everything to beperfect.

However, this looming event isn’t the only thing weighing on me. Instead, it’s the echoing silence between London and me that stretched onward throughout the day.

Every attempt at conversation was like trying to ignite a wet matchstick—futile and frustrating.

And I didn’t understand what had happened.

Things were good.So good.

Did I do something wrong?

The moment we arrived back at the club, he had sauntered off, claiming he needed to finalize some things before we opened the doors. Evidently, he thought I could handle the rest of the arrangements upstairs alone.

But deep down, I think I know why he’s avoiding me.

Why did I have to push things with us?
