I huff a laugh. “You don’t have to lie. Just tell her I’ll be right back.”

He tips his head and takes another step back. “Will do. Good luck.”

“Thanks,” I say, as I hop into my vehicle and fire it up.

I wave at Cal and he turns to make his way back to the building.

My pulse kicks into high gear by the time I hit the bridge over Lake Superior. This is probably a crazy idea and to be fair, I totally recognize it. It doesn’t mean I won’t follow through with it.

I might not know Lily very well these days, but I know someone who seems to have a strong pulse on her. The only question is whether or not I’ll be able to convince Quinn to persuade Lily to say yes.

My gut says‘piece of cake.’

Quinn was willing to help me get Lily to dinner last night and he seems cool with me hanging out with her. He wants her happy—just like I do.

When I pull up to Dirty Deeds, I’ve convinced myself this will truly be a walk in the park. In fact, I should be back to Nocté in no time.

The streets are more busy than usual—probably because it’s a Friday night—and I have to wait a minute just to get out. However, when I open the door to Dirty Deeds, Quinn isn’t behind the counter, like I anticipated.

My eyes scan the store, but there are only three people. Two guys in the back and a woman who’s making her way this way. Her pink hair is split down the middle and braided on either side of her head

“Can I help you find something?” The woman asks. She has a tattoo of a thorny rose etched up her forearm and a curious expression on her face.

“Uh, yeah. Is Quinn here?” I ask, looking past her, half-expecting to see him pop up between the shelves.

She shakes her head. “Not today. He has the day off.”

My face falls. “Oh.”

He mentioned something about taking his mom to the hospital today.

Shit, now I wish I would have driven him home. At least then I’d know where he lives.

“Is there somethingIcan help you with?” she repeats, but this time, she puts more seduction into the way she asks. She even twirls one of her braids in her finger.

“Uh—no. I just need Quinn,” I say, blinking hard.

“Oh,” she says like she just had an epiphany. “Shame.”

I ignore the revelation she must have just had, seeing as it’s inaccurate and I don’t care. “You don’t happen to have his address, do you?”

“Sorry, we aren’t allowed to give out personal info on our employees.” She shrugs.

“Shit,” I mutter, but nod. That would have been too easy. “Thanks.”

I walk out of the store and stand on the sidewalk with my hands in my hair.

What was I thinking? Just because I work most days of the week doesn’t mean everyone else does.

This was a stupid idea.

Cursing under my breath, I start walking to my vehicle.

“London?”

I stop in my tracks and spin on the spot.

Lily’s friend—the senator-looking woman—is standing outside Dirty Books. Her hand is on the door but she lets go of it when I turn around and walk in her direction.
