“Lily isn’t a frail little flower. She’s capable of rising tochallenges,” Tasia says sternly.

I wave my hands between us. “No, I didn’t mean to imply she couldn’t. It’s just—Ireallywant her to do this. But she wants to think about it.”

She tips her chin in understanding.

“What should I do?” I ask, my words coming out softer than I wish they would.

Tasia takes a beat to think before she responds. “If Lil needs time to think about it, there’s a good reason for it. But don’t assume the answer is going to be no. She’s been going through some shit”—she locks her gaze with me—“and it’s been messing with her.”

“Is there anything I can—”

She shakes her head and cuts me off, “London, she’s happy to see you. She’s happy that you’re back in her life, even if she’s not sure what that means just yet. But …” her gaze drops to the ground and she bites her lower lip like she’s trying to stop the next few words from coming out.

“But?” I press.

Her brown eyes rise to mine and there’s a significance to the look she gives me. “But if she means anything to you, don’t let her get away.”

“I won’t. I can’t—”

“She has enough people in her life who treat her as an afterthought,” Tasia continues. “Make her feel like a priority and she’ll forget any of the reasons she was worried.”

I take another deep breath, feeling like her words bring more than just support—they bring inklings of hope.

“She’s always been a priority,” I say, jutting out my chin.

She nods. “Then I wouldn’t worry.”

A smile finds its way to my lips. Despite missing Quinn, I still found a way to feel better about this whole thing. While Lily and I may have drifted apart since we were kids, she certainly found a way of surrounding herself with people who care.

“Lily’s very lucky to have you in her life,” I offer, reaching out and placing a hand on Tasia’s upper arm. “Thank you for looking after her.”

“She’s my girl.” Tasia grins.

“Ditto.”

With that, I turn back to my vehicle and check my watch. I’ve been gone a little over an hour. There’s a chance Myles hasn’t quite noticed my absence and I’d like to keep it that way.

“Thanks again, Tasia,” I say as I open my door.

“No problem,” she calls back.

I hop in, start the engine, and grab my phone so I can add Quinn’s address to it before I forget. Then, I set my phone in the cupholder and shift into gear.

The drive back to Nocté takes about twenty minutes, but the entire thing is a blur as I play over Tasia’s words in my head.

She has enough people in her life who treat her as an afterthought.

My instincts tell me that’s a jab at her husband Seth.

If Tasia’s not a fan, maybe that could play to my advantage?

I shake my head.

What in the hell, London? She’s yourfriend.

What difference does it make if her best friend doesn’t like her husband?

However, my heart nearly claws its way out of my chest when my phone dings, and I see it’s a text message from Lily. But I’m almost afraid to open it.
