Prologue

Phoenix

Father walks into Lucifer’s chambers like he owns the place—that bastard is still a coward, though. He’s never been there for me, my mother or my brothers. I hate him to the core of my being to this day because of it. But as it seems, it’s his time to stalk the earthly plain, again. He just needs the essence of Lucifer to roam freely. Whatever the case, it makes him weak—weak, I tell you! As a shadow demon, he can’t stray too far from Lucifer for too long, or he’ll weaken like the pansy bitch he is and die.

“You can’t do a thing without him can you, Dad? Do you even hear us talking to you? Do you care what you are doing to us—any of us? You have seven sons! Seven…you just dropped your seed all over this earth and…you don’t even give a good God damn. Do you even hear me demanding answers of you? What are you doing? No, stop it. Don’t go to him. This is not what I’m here on earth for!”

“Come.” Lucifer’s voice beckons him. “I have what it is you seek.”

“No, you prick. Don’t you dare gamble my life…the life of your seed, your sons, my mother, my daughter! You won’t get away with this demented plan!”

I watch him kneel in front of Lucifer, with his mouth agape, awaiting his gift. Lucifer slit his wrist, with a blade I’d never seen, and I watch as the crimson liquid turns from black to red before dripping into my father’s mouth.

My sperm donor moans, welcoming the euphoria buzzing through him, but agony quickly replaces it.

“You son of a bitch. What did you do? What are you allowing to happen to this shit show of a family YOU created?”

I run to try and stop it, try to interrupt it, try to...I don’t even know what, but my body is cemented to the ground. I feel fire coursing through my veins—my abs and my biceps burn.

“Phoenix, no!”

I hear my mother.

I hear Tamryn, the woman I love.

“Don’t go to him!”

“He doesn’t care about you or us, Son!”

“I love you.”

“But he is hurting us, he is hurting you all,” I grit out amidst my physical struggle. “My body is an inferno. Why am I so damn hot? Mom!”

“It’s the curse, Son.”

“What curse…”

“He means you no good. You, only you, can fight this and break the curse that has you bound.”

“I can’t do this. I can't, I'm burning!”

“She will save you!”

I turn to look at Tamryn, but she is aglow and far away, across a lake of fire.

“Who is she?”

“Our Grace, our Grace!”

“What are you talking about?”

“Son, you must pay attention, you must.”

“Mom!”

“Don’t let the curse eat you alive, Son, you can’t! Pay attention! Seek the help you need to break this that has you bound. You must do this with a broken spirit and a contrite heart!”

The flames lick at my feet as I turn back to look at my father. He is sneering at me. “You can’t break this curse that I have cast over my seven sons. You will take on my sins, so I can be free!”
