"I do," he says with certainty, "More than you realize."

His confidence prompts a bold accusation from me. "So, youwerekeeping tabs on me all this time."

Reece's expression changes to one of confusion. "What do you mean?"

I confront him with my knowledge. "I know you played a part in getting me this job."

His shock is genuine, his face registering surprise, allowing me to slip past him and leave the office. This time, he doesn't stop me.

ChapterTen

Genesis

Iarrive at the Forrester Resort and Casino's Grand Ballroom for the company Christmas party, fashionably late as usual. Slipping in unnoticed is my aim, hoping that the already lively and possibly tipsy crowd will pay me little to no mind. The ballroom, decked out in its holiday finest, sparkles with festive decorations. Twinkling lights and elegant ornaments hang from the ceiling, while a magnificent Christmas tree stands tall, commanding the room's attention.

Scanning the bustling room, I seek a quiet corner to gather my thoughts and observe. The party is in full swing, with Forrester employees spread throughout the grand space. Some are gathered around tables laden with an array of hors d'oeuvres, others are seated enjoying a more formal dinner. Many hold glasses filled with bubbly champagne or spiked, creamy eggnog, engaging in animated conversations or laughter.

A section of the ballroom has been transformed into a mini-casino. Here, partygoers are indulging in a bit of friendly gambling, with Blackjack tables, poker games, and even a few slot machines adding to the night's entertainment. The sound of clinking chips and the occasional cheer from a winning hand add to the festive atmosphere.

I navigate through the crowd, taking in the joyous scenes, feeling a mix of anticipation and nerves. The aim is to blend in, yet part of me knows avoiding the Forrester family entirely might be challenging. But for now, I focus on the moment, ready to embrace the festive spirit of the evening.

The room is alive with the hum of conversation, laughter, and holiday music. It's the perfect cover for me to blend in unnoticed. As I weave through the crowd, I realize how hungry I am. It's been a hectic day finalizing my article on Knox for the Bachelor series.

Knox, to my surprise, has been more than just an assignment. Getting to know him has given me insight into his journey with the Forrester International empire and the complex dynamics within his family. There's a softer side to him reserved for a certain editor-in-chief, a story I promised to keep under wraps. I can only hope that Robyn, my boss, will see this side of Knox before it's public knowledge.

As I ponder this, Robyn finds me. She looks stunning in her festive attire, her dark hair styled in an elegant hairstyle that adds to her holiday charm. "Happy holidays, Genesis! It feels like ages since I've last seen you! My-my don't you look lovely. Your dress is to die for," she greets me warmly. I notice she's already in ajollymood, probably a few glasses of wine deep.

I laugh and look at my outfit, a departure from my usual business attire. Tonight, I've chosen a red cocktail dress that's both sexy and flirty, allowing me to let my hair down, both figuratively and literally. Robyn chuckles as I tuck my dark, relaxed waves behind my ear. "Sometimes we all need a break from our power suits," she says, scanning the room, perhaps looking for Knox.

I casually ask if the Forresters have arrived yet.

"Hmm, I saw Talon over by the bar," Robyn notes.

Laughing, I respond, "Of course. Where else would he be?"

She looks around thoughtfully. "Haven't seen Knox or Reece, though."

"That's interesting," I comment, a bit surprised. "This party's been going for over an hour now."

"Yes, quite interesting," she agrees, her tone curious. "How did the interviews end up going with Knox? I know you have been spending quite a bit of time with him, lately."

I nod, feeling a slight sense of accomplishment. "Actually, we wrapped up the interview. I'm working on the final touches for the article. It should be ready for your review just after Christmas, in time for the New Year's edition."

"That sounds promising," she says, her interest evident. “Do you think this Bachelor series is worth it?"

Offering her a reassuring smile, I reply, "You'll be pleasantly surprised. He's quite an interesting person, really kind too. I can see why you might be...fondof him." I nudge her playfully, and she blushes, a rare sight that makes her look even more endearing under the festive lights.

"Yeah-yeah, whatever," she deflects with a laugh. "Let's get some food, shall we? You must be starving after all that work."

"You're absolutely right," I admit, feeling my stomach grumble in agreement. "I'm famished."

As we head toward the carving stations, ready to indulge in the feast set out for the evening, we pass Jeron and Rachael Forrester.

"Happy holidays, ladies!” Mr. Forrester greets us with enthusiasm. "Looking forward to the wonderful contributions you'll make to Forrester Media in the coming year." His words, though perhaps a bit rehearsed, are appreciated.

"Thank you, Mr. Forrester, and happy holidays to you too," I respond politely, echoing the sentiment.

Robyn chimes in with similar courtesy, "Happy holidays, Mr. Forrester. We're excited for the new year."
