As I peruse the menu, my mind wanders back to Jenna on the dock the other night. I try to push the thoughts away, knowing that it's wrong to have these feelings for her. But like a magnet, those thoughts keep coming no matter how much I resist.

Just then, Jenna comes over to take my order. Her smile is infectious, and I feel warmth spread through my body as she stands there in front of me.

"Hey Josh, what can I get for you?" she asks, her voice soft and captivating.

"Just a burger and fries, please," I reply, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Burger with ketchup and mayo, no mustard, extra cheese, and sweet tea. You got it," she says.

"You remember all your customer’s orders?" I ask impressed she got my order right.

"Only the regulars and the cute cowboys I can't seem to get out of my head," she says.

Before I can even get a word out, she spins and goes into the kitchen.

I'm sure I look like an idiot sitting there with my mouth open in complete shock. A quick look around the diner proves no one was in earshot. There is only one older couple at a table in the opposite corner, and no way should they hear anything.

I can feel the heat rising to my cheeks as I try to process what Jenna just said. Did she really just call me cute? My mind is racing as I try to come up with a response, but before I can even open my mouth, she's back with my drink.

As she sets the cup in front of me, her fingers lightly brush against mine, sending a jolt of electricity through my body.

"I'll have your food out soon," she says, her voice low and sexy.

Once again, she goes back to the kitchen, leaving me alone with my thoughts.

My thoughts fixate on the way her fingers felt against mine, the rightness of it. What would happen if I was brave enough to act on these feelings?

Unable to take my eyes off of her, I watch as she brings the food to the other table, stopping and chatting to them. She is smiling and laughing, and the couple seems to know her, and I wonder if people come back just to visit her. I know that is the biggest draw that brought me here today instead of heading home and grabbing some cold leftovers.

Jenna goes into the kitchen, coming back with my order, and sets the plate in front of me. "Enjoy, cowboy," she says with a wink before gliding sexily back to the kitchen.

My heart is beating so fast I can't even concentrate on my food.

When I take a bite of my burger, the taste is lost on me. All I can think about now is Jenna. I can still feel her soft hair in my hands and her curves pressed against me.

Then, as I take a sip of my sweet tea, I catch her looking at me from across the diner. Our eyes meet, and once again the heat rises to my cheeks and other places. But this time, I don't look away.

Jenna walks over to my table and takes a seat across from me. "Is everything okay with your food?" she asks, but her eyes tell me there's more to her visit than just checking on my meal.

"Yeah, it's great. Thanks," I reply, trying to keep my composure.

She leans in a little closer, her eyes never leaving mine. "You know, Josh, I've been thinking about that night on the dock a lot lately," she says softly.

My heart wants to be out of my chest at her words.

"I have too," I reply, my voice low and husky.

Desire is clear in her eyes as she studies my face for just a moment. But she doesn't get a chance to reply because Austin calls to her from the kitchen. She smiles at me and turns to see what Austin wants.

Quickly, I finish my meal, pay my bill, and leave a generous tip for Jenna. As I walk out of the diner, I see her standing at the door to the kitchen, watching me leave. Our eyes meet for a brief moment before I turn and walk away, my mind reeling with thoughts of her.

I know I need to stop these feelings before they get out of hand, but it's easier said than done. Though I wonder hopefully and somewhat urgently, if there's a chance for us, even just a small one.

Chapter 6

Jenna

SeeingJoshatthediner yesterday was nice. It was so easy to flirt, and I felt at ease around him. Though I know I need to be careful about flirting in public like that. I know how worried he is about things getting back to my dad.
