Then what?

Chapter 11

Josh

Jennaisright, andI definitely owe her a date. A real date where she can get dressed up, and I plan a special night for us.

So that's what we are doing today. I stayed up last night planning, and I think I have the perfect evening planned that will wow her, but still give us our privacy as we test this all out.

Today, she has been working with Dolly while I’m inside watching her from the kitchen window as I get things prepared for our date.

When she finally came to get ready, she had this glow about her. Whether it’s from working with the horse or our plans for tonight, I’m not sure.

In order for Jenna to have the upstairs to herself, I got ready downstairs. Right now I'm waiting in the living room for her, going over all the plans in my head.

I almost swallowed my tongue when she stepped down the stairs. She has on a sold black romper with shorts and a black sheer maxi dress over it that has a slit up to her hip. In addition, she has on her favorite cowboy boots, which she told me before she never gets very many opportunities to wear. The turquoise jewelry she’s wearing perfectly completes the outfit. Altogether, Jenna looks gorgeous and I swear I've never seen anything so beautiful in my life.

"You look stunning," I tell her, not knowing what else to say.

She blushes, a soft smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "Thank you, Josh. You look very handsome yourself."

I'm in dark jeans, a button-down shirt, cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat. It's pretty much my go-to outfit. Church clothes, my momma used to call it.

Taking her hand, I lead her out front to the ranch truck, where I have everything packed. Then, helping her in, I get her settled before closing the door. As I walk around to the driver's side, my eyes are once again caught by her beauty. She has a certain aura around her that radiates warmth and kindness.

Getting into the driver's seat, I start the engine and the sound of the truck's roar fills the air. Glancing over at Jenna, I notice she's looking at me with a curious expression.

"What's up?" I ask, a small smirk playing on my lips.

"Where are we going?" she asks, a hint of excitement lacing her words.

"It's a surprise," I reply, not wanting to give anything away just yet.

I take the road that goes behind the house and past the barn toward the back pastures. The sun will be setting soon, and we will get to watch the night sky put on a beautiful show.

When we reach the field that I had in mind, I park the truck and turn to Jenna. "Wait here. Let me get set up."

She nods, and I leave the truck running. As I work on setting up the truck bed for our cozy, romantic evening, my eyes keep finding their way back to Jenna.

She's sitting patiently in the passenger seat, watching me with her beautiful amber eyes, as if she's trying to make sense of my actions. I place a soft blanket on the truck bed floor, a couple of cushions, and the cooler with our meal. Finally, I set a few candles around that will help keep the bugs away and light them.

When I'm done, I walk over to the passenger side, open the car door for her, and hold out my hand.

"Ready?" I ask.

Jenna looks at me with a wide smile as she takes my hand. "Yes, I'm ready," she says, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

She looks around, taking in the serenity of the pasture as the sun sets in the distance, casting a warm orange glow across the landscape. I can feel her hand trembling slightly and give her a reassuring smile.

"This is beautiful," she whispers, her eyes sparkling with wonder.

Leading her over to the truck bed, I help her up and settle her onto the cushions. She looks around, taking in the cozy setup I've created. Soft blankets are draped over the side of the truck bed, and the flickering candles cast a warm, gleaming luminosity across everything.

"You did all of this for me?" she asks, her voice soft with emotion.

I nod, taking a seat next to her. "I wanted to make tonight special," I say, my gaze locked onto hers.

All this time I've been pushing her away. Now we are going to take this next step. I figure I owe it to her to prove I'm all in. The smile on her lips draws me to her like a moth to a flame. We haven't even opened the cooler, but I don’t want to wait another minute before I kiss her conveying how I feel.
