"Let's put your stuff in your car and go take a ride on the Ferris wheel and watch the sunset. You game?" he asks.

"That sounds great and yes," I say.

He walks with me, and I place the bags in the trunk of my car, and we head out to get in line at the Ferris wheel. Thankfully, there isn't much of a wait.

The town always sets the Ferris wheel up in the same place every year. It's so they can take advantage of the lake views. On your descent, you have the most beautiful views, the kind that would make a great postcard.

It's the style of Ferris wheel where only two people fit in a car. With Josh and me in the same car, there is no extra room. I'm pushed up to his side, so he places his arm on the back of the car behind me to give me extra room. Though I have to say, it does give it a romantic feel.

As we slowly rise above the ground, my heart beats faster and faster. It's not just because of the height, but because of the tension between Josh and me. Our bodies are so close together, and I feel his warmth seeping into me. When I turn my head to look at him, he's staring out across the lake with a small smile on his face. He looks so handsome in the golden glow of the sun setting. How can I possibly resist taking a minute to appreciate him? I let my eyes linger on his beautiful blue eyes, his strong jawline and those broad shoulders.

As we get to the top of the Ferris wheel and the sun begins its descent, my eyes are riveted on the breathtaking view. The orange and pink hues of the sunset reflect on the lake below, making it visually stunning.

"Wow." Josh says, breaking the silence.

I can feel his eyes on me. When I turn to face him, my heart skips a beat. He's looking at me with such intensity that I feel my cheeks flush.

"You're beautiful," he whispers like he's scared someone will hear us up here.

The butterflies in my stomach flutter and then take flight.

When the Ferris wheel stops with us at the top, I look at him and my heart beats faster than ever before. The look in his eyes is one I can't describe, but it leaves me breathless. He reaches his hand out and brushes a strand of hair out of my face before lightly tracing my jawline, his touch sending shivers down my spine.

"I've wanted to do this for so long," he says, leaning in slowly.

I know he's going to kiss me, and I can't wait to feel his lips on mine. I've waited so long for this kiss, so when the Ferris wheel jerks and starts moving, pulling us from the moment I want to scream. Josh sits back with a look of regret in his eyes. As the Ferris wheel starts going down, I’m awash with regret and disappointment. I wanted that kiss more than anything, but the moment has passed, and now we're back to being just friends. Or are we? I can't read Josh's expression, and it's driving me crazy. Does he regret almost kissing me? Or does he regret not kissing me?

When we step out of the car, the tension between us is thick. Even though I can feel his eyes on me, I can't bring myself to look at him just yet.

"Ready to go watch some fireworks?" he asks.

He's not trying to bolt. That's a good sign, right?

Chapter 3

Josh

Holyshit,Ialmostkissed her. If the Ferris wheel hadn't started moving when it did, I would have kissed her no doubt about it. What I wouldn't give to know what her lips taste like, what it felt like to hold her in my arms, to cradle her close to me.

"I have a blanket in my truck. Let’s grab it and then find a place to watch the fireworks," I say. With everything in me, I’m trying to keep things normal between us. The last thing I want to do is spook her and lose out on any more time together.

"Actually, if you are up for a short drive, I know a place where we can watch the fireworks away from the crowds," she says, surprising me.

"Alright, let's do it," I say.

Weaving in and out of the crowd that's all heading towards the lake, we go to my truck. While we walk, I can feel her gaze on me. It's like she's analyzing every move I make, trying to figure out what I'm thinking. It’s no surprise that I really like her eyes on me.

When we get there, I open the truck door and help her inside, making sure she's buckled up before closing the door and getting in on my side. Starting the engine, I turn on the radio, scanning through the stations until I find one playing a soft rock song. It's the perfect background music for the drive.

Jenna gives me directions, taking us to the east side of the lake, and down a residential road. It’s the same one that leads to her parents. Her parents’ dock is a great place to view fireworks, but I'm not sure I want to be somewhere that Evan might find us.

"We going to your parents’ place?" I ask wanting to mentally prepare myself.

"Nope. See that stone mailbox there? Pull into that driveway." She points to a house on my left.

Once I pull into the long driveway, a cabin comes into view. "Whose place is this?" I was not able to recall whose house it is.

"My friend Sarah, it's her husband's family cabin. They live in Rock Springs and do July 4th down there. They told me I can come here and use the patio and the deck any time I want."
