Makoa took the crates off his shoulders and set them in the corner, then dropped himself into the examination chair on the other side of the desk and kicked his feet up.

“Sure thing,” he said. “So, how you doing, cousin? It’s been a while since we’ve had time to sit down and just shoot the shit. It seems like whenever you show up at our place it’s for family business.”

“That’s because it is always for family business. You three chose the furthest part of the island to live. It’s not easy to stop in for a chat when you’re that far away.”

“We’re notthatfar if you swim it,” he said. “But sure. I get it. It would be nice to see you more, though. Especially now that you and Kai are on better terms. You finally got through to him. Bet that must be a load off your shoulder, eh?”

“I didn’t get through to him. That was Visir.”

“Right. I guess all he needed was to get laid. Turned his ass responsible.” Makoa laughed. “Ah, shit.Ineed to get laid.”

“Istil lives with you guys,” I said casually.

“Uh-huh. He’s not interested in me. And, I mean, he’s not really my type, anyway.”

I felt a little silly about how relieved I was to hear that. “And Leo?”

“No, my alpha brother isn’t my type, either,” Makoa said.

“Ha-ha.”

The chair creaked as he sat up. “I didn’t realize you were so interested in what Istil is up to.”

“Mmhm. That’s because I’m not.” I tapped the stack of papers against the desk. “I was just curious about my dear cousins. Grandma is worried about you two, you know, now that the golden child has a mate.”

“Hold on a fucking second now,” Makoa said. He held up his palm and then jabbed a finger at me. “Why isn’t she worried aboutyou? Talk about golden children.”

“I never said that she wasn’t.”

Makoa grunted. “Oh, the charmed life of being a member of this family. She knows your feelings about having kids, right?”

I pushed my thumb into my palm and rubbed the muscles tense from writing all day. “I think she has an idea.”

“Well… I don’t blame you for not wanting to talk about it. It’s some rough shit, brotha. But I do have to say… your dad—”

“Don’t.”

He stared at me, then sat back in the chair. “Okay. Just want you to know you, you’ve got my ear if you need it.”

I nodded. “Sorry. I know you were just trying to help, and I appreciate it. I always have.”

“As long as you're happy, that’s all that matters to me.”

I had a purpose. I was doing what I was born to do, what I’d been raised to do. I was satisfied with supporting the people around me. Wasn’t that happiness?

“But about Istil,” Makoa said.

“What about him?”

“At the ceremony, you two went back to the house.”

“Yeah. He burned himself.”

“You were gone for a pretty long time. A really long time. I wasn’t the only one who noticed.”

I sighed. “I was giving him treatment.”

“Treatment…with your dick?”
