I stepped quietly and quickly, hardly making a sound. Ari, on the other hand, walked like, well, a sea dragon. The jungle wasn’t his place.

Branches caught on his robes and pulled them open, revealing a flash of his chest before he tugged the fabric back into place. He straightened himself up and then immediately walked face first into a palm frond.

“You just stay behind me,” I said. “I don’t want you to step on anything we need.”

“What a mess,” he muttered. “I’ve never been so unprepared. It was a major mistake. None of this should’ve happened.”

“Don’t be so hard on yourself. We all make mistakes. Watch the vines.”

Ari barely ducked out of the way as we passed a web of low-hanging vines. “No, there’s no excuse. I’ve been distracted, and it’s risked Enry’s safety. I’m sorry.”

“Visir and I were charged with watching after him. You have nothing to be sorry for. It should’ve been our responsibility. As it turns out, pregnancies aren’t really our specialty. And we’ve all been so focused on the gate. I think each one of us believed we’d be home by now.”

I stopped suddenly as the scent of one of the plants on our list hit my nose. I was bent over, my nose pointed to the ground, and Ari rammed into my backside and knocked me forward onto my forearms with my ass pressed into the air and his hands resting on my hips. Right in front of my face was a tiny little blue-green plant, the source of the familiar scent.

“Istil, we have a job to do,” Ari said.

Was it just my imagination or could I feel the outline of his cock against me?

“Funny,” I said and dropped out of his grip. “Is that why you’ve been so distracted? Can’t stop thinking about me?”

“I promise, I’ve not been thinking about you.”

“Well, good. Me neither,” I said. “Look, right here. This plant.”

Ari crouched down so his face was next to mine. “I know this plant. It’s called jellyfish root.”

I brushed the leaves with my fingers and felt the plant’s spread of energy into the soil.

“Thank you,” I whispered to it before I carefully pulled it free. Its roots were long and translucent, much like a jellyfish’s tentacles.

Ari stowed it inside his robe, and we continued on. This little stroll might’ve been fun, were it not for the looming pressure of everything that was happening. The dragon egg and the drakengate were one thing, but being alone again with Ari was also not helping.

“What happened during the celebration was just a one-time thing,” I decided to announce. I glanced back at him. “And you’re not my usual type.”

How did I know? I’d never had an alpha before. Maybe hewasmy type. Maybe I thought that by putting it out there, I could get my head clear of him. Maybe I was just trying to tell myself that fucking Ari again was not something that should happen.

Why? Because I could feel how easily I would become addicted to him. I’d never been so consumed before, but maybe I was just getting what I’d wished for. I wanted to be fucked by an alpha, and this was what happened when you’d never had alpha cock before.

He let out a little grunt. “So you say you haven’t been thinking about me.”

“I just wanted you to know.”

“Thank you for confirming that night wasn’t just a strange dream,” he said.

“Strange?” I said. “What part of it was strange?”

“I certainly hadn’t planned for it to go that way. But you were pretty irresistible.”

No, no, no.Please don’t say anything like that right now.

“Oh, really? Irresistible?” I paused next to a tree and pointed to a purple mushroom growing from the bark. “This one. We need this one.”

Ari examined it and then tucked it away. “I thought I told you. I like watching you dance.”

My body didn’t have a chance. It was just like the night of the celebration. My cock was instantly hard, pressing uncomfortably against the inside of my robes, and the heat was building down between my legs. In seconds, I would be dripping if I couldn’t get a hold of myself.

I hurried ahead, trying to keep my mind centered on the scent trail of the next item on our list, but it was so difficult to ignore Ari’s. It kept overtaking me like it was trying to distract me from what I needed to do. I wanted to turn around and shout at him to stop smelling so good.
