“I’ll think about it. I’m glad you like it.”

A female customer passed by, waving at him on her way out. He waved back and mirrored her wink. A spark of jealousy hit me, not because he flirted with other women but because he didn’t do it with me. At first, I didn’t think it was intentional. But when you saw a guy treating every woman like they were so special, it was hard not to wonder if there was something inherently abhorrent about me. I had enough confidence in myself not to give in to insecurity, but…

“Why do you never flirt with me?”

To my surprise, Sebastian choked on the drink he was chugging.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

He hesitated, then put down the glass and visibly considered my question. For a second, something darkened in his features, but it was gone too quickly and I wondered if it was my imagination. He grinned—not a flirty grin, but his standard friendly one when it came to me, like someone placating a kid. I hated it.

“Honest thoughts?”

“Yes.”

“You’re too young and innocent. Frankly, I don’t think you can handle it.”

I had braced myself for his answer, but it still knocked me back. And yeah, it kind of hurt. Yet something inside me refused to just let it pass, not when I had been standing my ground for quite a while now. Challenge rose in me, quick and fierce.

“Try me.”

“What?”

“Try me, Sebastian. I dare you to try to flirt with me. And you’re mistaken.”

“Mistaken?”

“Mistaken,” I confirmed. Then I boldly looked him in the eye. “I’m not innocent at all.”

CHAPTER 7

SEBASTIAN

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing from her.

It wasn’t the Sophie I was used to. But then again, it wasn’t as though I’d known her that long, and every new aspect I was learning held an appeal that drew me in like a magnet. This held a huge appeal, but it was already dangerous waters to tread on. I knew I shouldn’t take the bait. I tried not to.

But I was also very curious.

“What do you mean?”

Sophie was busy wiping the counter even when there was no spill and we had no new customers aside from the ones Ricky was serving. She shrugged, then glanced at me.

“Oh, you know. I had a boyfriend for more than a year and we lived together. Sex will always be part of the equation. When you put two eager people together, it’s just really hard to stay innocent.”

I didn’t say a word, unsure how to respond to that. She didn’t seem to expect me to, either, as she continued talking.

“My first time was with him and I was very inexperienced, of course. But it didn’t take long for us to get the hang of it, and before we knew it, we were having sex regularly. Sex is fun. It’s such a great stress reliever, too, and a nice way to pass the time.”

“Yes. It’s fun.” It was more than fun. Sex was a blast, especially if the man knew what he was doing, andIalways knew what I was doing. The way she talked about it roused my curiosity more, but something stopped me from asking. After a while, I realized what it was.

Sophie was nervous. She was trying her best to hide it, but I could detect it underneath her bravado. That got to me, and I wondered if she never talked about sex with anyone before.

“It is,” she murmured, unaware of the turmoil in my mind. “We always experimented. I found what pleased him best and vice versa.”

Just like that, an image of her pleasing her lover so thoroughly popped into my head. So did warnings. It took everything in me to tamp down any remaining images, refusing to entertain them.
