“Sorry. I got carried away.”

In response, he kissed me harder, then pushed himself off the bed. I ogled his butt on his way out, then sighed and forced myself to get out of bed, too. I winced when my muscles ached even more, but there was one thing that would fix that.

After a hot shower and a set of fresh clothes that they already prepared for me in Matthew’s bathroom, I was drawn to the wonderful scents coming from the kitchen, where Sebastian had just finished cooking and was busy setting things up on multiple plates. My mouth watered, though I wasn’t sure if it was because of the food or the two bare-chested men.

“Is that mine?” I asked, pointing at one of the plates.

Sebastian’s face lit up when he saw me. In two quick strides, he was on me and kissing me, and I wrapped my arms around him to give him more leeway. I let out a surprised giggle when he grasped my waist, lifted me in the air, and twirled me mid-kiss, then dropped me on the ground with another kiss on my forehead. Rupert rolled his eyes at the man’s grandeur, but I could tell he was also amused.

“All yours, sweetheart, whatever you can finish. Eat up. You need all the energy you can get.”

I tried to find some dirty meaning in that, but Sebastian didn’t say it mischievously. I sat on the stool beside Rupert and tasted the eggs, then dug into the rest when I found them even better than I expected. I polished it off with some orange juice and paused when I caught the two eyeing each other.

“What?” I demanded.

“It’s Monday,” Sebastian reminded me.

“What about it?”

It clicked when I remembered the restaurant was closed on Mondays, and just like that, I knew where Matthew was and what was coming next.

“What do you think about coming back with us to headquarters?”

Marianne found me first, and I confessed to her that I hadn’t cooked her special recipe yet. She didn’t seem to mind as she introduced me to more folks. Second by second, the nerves that took hold of me on our way here disappeared as the women were friendly and the kids were just a bundle of joy. The men were more wary, but they were nice enough and didn’t make me feel uncomfortable. Again, it wasn’t what I expected, but I was starting to realize that was because I had already formed a pre-judgment of motorcycle gangs without really being exposed to one. It helped to have Rupert and Sebastian walking in with me—and Matthew being my friend—ensured I would be welcomed here, no questions asked.

Speaking of Matthew…

I was distracted when I got into a conversation about clothes with Jean Ravener, sister to one of the MC members, and a ball of sunshine. Her chirpiness was such a contrast to her emo clothes that I couldn’t figure her out, but she was so nice, too.

“Let’s go shopping sometime. I haven’t been around anyone my age inagesand I just want your opinion about stuff. I still like my clothes, but I’m thinking of changing it up a bit.”

“I would love that,” I said, pleased to have made a friend in a short amount of time. But my gaze kept wandering, searching for one person in the large space. “Where’s Matthew, by the way?”

“Oh, he’s somewhere at the back, I think. He took a young couple in and is getting them acquainted with the others.”

My gaze flicked back to Jean in surprise. “Took them in?”

“Yeah. He does that a lot. That’s how me and my brother got into this club. Our parents beat us up and Matthew knew them. He threatened them and gave us a place to stay when we were old enough to leave. Now, we have decent jobs and a nice apartment in the city.”

Warmth spread over my chest. “Wow. I didn’t know that.”

“He loves helping people out. That’s just his nature. I bet that couple needed somewhere to stay, too, and who knows? Maybe they’ll be part of the club soon. Are you going to be part of the club, too?”

“I don’t know,” I said honestly. “For now, I suppose I’m just a friend of the club.”

My mind went back to the story of how Matthew also saved Rupert, and it finally made sense to me that these people weren’t just comrades but actual, real family, even without the name and their motorcycles. No wonder Matthew was their leader, too, with his compassion that engulfed everyone, refusing to leave a single person behind.

On cue, my eyes drifted to my side just as he strode out of a corner room with other people in tow. My heart jumped and then settled as I watched him gather them around and speak so earnestly but with so much authority. He oozed so much charisma and passion that I couldn’t help how my feelings shifted and changed, deepening in the span of a few seconds. I knew it was no longer just attraction, but I couldn’t quite name it yet.

As if he sensed my gaze, he looked up and met it. A smile formed on his lips and heat curled in my belly when I remembered that same smile when he fucked me, then when he played with me while Rupert fucked me. But Matthew didn’t approach me. There were no traces of his lust from last night as he was back to the cool man with a level head who got things done and put emotions on the sideline. Eventually, I realized that the moment we got here, Sebastian and Rupert kind of avoided me, too, careful not to display intimacy around others.

Maybe it meant last night was casual for them and a foursome was something they did often. Maybe it meant there were no deeper feelings on their end. I tried not to wonder too much.

But my heart had already gone from soaring to heavy.
