“I know. You twisted it. At least, that’s all I hope happened.”

The situation with my ankle was easy to sort out in my mind. I fell, it hurt. The rest of what had happened on the beach was another story. Marta’s betrayal, the terrifying arrival of the men, Logan rushing in like a freaking action hero… it was all too surreal to even process.

“I’m fine.” I turned in my seat, Logan visible in the corner of my eye. He didn’t say anything, but I could sense that he didn’t believe my answer.

It didn’t take long until we reached the estate. Four guards were at the gate, all swarming to the ATV as Logan pulled to a stop. He issued orders to them in a commanding voice, telling them where to go and what to do. Once that was done, he pulled the ATV the rest of the way onto the estate, the heavy gate shutting behind us. I was relieved when it was closed. The gate wasn’t just for show; I could tell the bars were solid, likely made of steel.

When Logan killed the ATV engine, I prepared to step off.

“Not yet,” he said. “You’re not putting a pound of weight on that ankle until I’ve had a chance to take a look at it.”

I wanted to protest, but the tone in Logan’s voice made it clear there was no point in that.

“Yeah. Sure.”

He stepped over and scooped me up, my body pressing against his. As much as I wanted to walk on my own two feet, I had to admit that there was something nice about the way he held me, something that made me feel as if danger couldn’t touch me.

Logan carried me up the stairs of the mansion, the doors opening on their own. The staff was waiting inside, all of them regarding us with worried expressions. Pearl hurried over.

“What the hell happened down there?” she asked.

“I’ll tell you all about it later.” Logan’s tone was firm and commanding. “Right now, I need to get her upstairs.”

“Of course.” Pearl glanced down at my ankle, noticing the issue right away. She placed her hand on the swollen spot, a tinge of pain radiating outward from it. “Hurt?”

“Yeah, a little.”

She smiled. “Could be a hell of a lot worse. Get up there and lie down.”

With that, Logan carried me up the stairs all the way to the third floor, toward what seemed to be the master bedroom.

Logan carried me over to the big bed, setting me down. The covers were soft as silk, the mattress like laying on a cloud. The sensation was enough to bring me the first smile I’d had since the incident on the beach.

Once I was on the bed, Logan gave me a look over with careful eyes, as if wanting to make sure there were no other injuries that he might have missed. Despite all that was happening, I liked his eyes on my body.

“Stay there,” he said. “Be right back.”

He stepped away, heading into the ensuite bathroom.

He returned a moment later with a small medical kit.

“Wait,” I said, watching him kneel down and set the kit onto the bed. “Do you know what you’re doing?”

“I know a little bit of first aid. Had to learn it a while back.”

He didn’t go into any more detail than that, leaving me to wonder where he’d learned such skills and why.

Once more, he examined my ankle.

“How does that feel?”

“It hurts. But not too badly.”

“That’s a good sign. Now, what I want you to do is rotate your foot. Do it slowly.”

I nodded, obeying his command. Slowly, carefully, I began to rotate my foot. A dull ache radiated from the area, but I was able to do it.

“How does that feel?” he asked.
