Finally, she said one word.

“OK.”

I knew that wasn’t the end of it. Her father was a total piece of shit, a real bastard, but he was her father all the same. She’d need time to work through that.

Her eyes flashed and she turned to me with worry.

I placed my hand on her belly.

“He’s fine,” I said. “Or she.”

Emily closed her eyes, a tear trickling down in relief.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“Sorry? For what?”

“For not telling you. But I only found out yesterday. Roberto knew too, but I swore him to secrecy. I swear I was going to tell you tonight, but—”

I didn’t give her a chance to finish, leaning in and sealing her mouth with a kiss.

“It’s OK,” I said. “It’s better than OK. I love you Emily.”

It was strange. I’d been debating back and forth how I felt, whether I ought to say the words, if I truly meant them. Now that they were out in the open like that, it seemed like the easiest thing in the world.

She smiled. “I love you, too.”

Epilogue I

Emily

Almost six months later…

You’d never know it was Logan’s birthday by the way he acted. That is to say, he hadn’t acknowledged it at all. Pearl and Marianne and I weren’t about to let the day slip by unnoticed, of course.

“Surprise!” The three of us shouted as Logan stepped out onto the back patio of the island mansion.

Logan, looking sexy as ever in a white linen shirt and matching pants, tilted his sunglasses down a bit to get a better look at us. My eyes were on his chest, a few of the buttons of his shirt undone, enough to give me a scrumptious view of his chiseled upper body. Didn’t matter that I’d seen him naked a million times—the mere sight of him was enough to turn me on.

“What the hell is going on here?”

Marianne sprang out of her seat and rushed over to Logan, throwing her willowy arms around him.

“It’s yourbirthday, silly! What do you think is going on?”

Logan let out a sigh, shaking his head as he looked over the setup.

“You guys didn’t have to do any of this.”

“You’re right, big guy,” Pearl said. “We didn’t. And that’s what makes it special.”

I stood up, waddling over to Logan and giving him a hug and a kiss.

“Happy birthday, handsome.”

He allowed himself a small smile. “Thanks, gorgeous.”

After one more kiss, he stepped back and looked at the display. The patio table was set up with streamers and confetti and snacks, along with a few presents, Marianne’s covered in a big sheet.
