“At long last our queen arises!” a cheerful voice sang beside us.

The owner of the voice was a man dressed in wildly colored robes, an apron across his waist, and long fiery hair pulled back in a reckless ponytail. He smirked with a sparkle in his bright green eyes as he saluted me, followed by a bow at the waist.

“Luc,” the captain said to the man, nodding. “Have you seen my brother?”

The man wiped his hands on his apron and nodded firmly. “He’s in his room, preparing for the end of the world.”

“As always,” Adrian said, rolling his eyes.

The man named Luc waved a finger at the captain. “You should acknowledge his efforts. You wouldn’t be captain if it weren’t for him.”

“Are you my cook or my mother?”

“What’s the difference? I feed you either way.”

Luc then turned to me, biting his lip and giving a playful wink.

“And who might the ocean goddess be?” Luc asked. “Will you properly introduce us?”

“No flirting with the hostages,” Adrian ordered, snapping his fingers in front of Luc’s face.

Luc shrugged. “You can’t blame me for having sight, Captain.”

Adrian tugged on my arm, leading us away. Luc waved us away with a warm smile and another bow. I found myself smiling despite the circumstances.

“Where are you taking me?” I asked after Adrian brought me down the stairs.

“I don’t appreciate you asking it like you’re in charge,” Adrian replied. “Just follow my orders, hostage.”

“And if I don’t?”

He turned back to me, gripping both my wrists in his hands. It wasn’t painful, but it was certainly possessive in a childish sort of way. A hollow deadly smile played across his lips. An ineffective scare tactic.

“Such sass…” he hissed. “Remember that you’ll be staying in my quarters, princess. So don’t give me any ideas on how to punish you.”

He chuckled to himself while I sneered at him.

“Or,” he added with a thoughtful nod, “I could leave you with my brother. That would punish you both.”

He leaned over and opened the door, throwing me in first. The moment I stumbled through the door, a blade struck next to my ear. I jumped, the point of it only inches from my face.

Following the blade to its owner, I was met with a man with bold eyes, darker than the ocean at midnight.

He pulled his sword out of the wall and stood back to his full height. He was slightly taller than Adrian, his body was stronger and more defined. He was also a bit more elegant, wearing a silk button-up shirt, the sleeves rolled up past his firm biceps.

“Get her out of here,” he said to the captain, nodding at me.

His voice was light and airy, a complete opposite of his words. He jabbed the blade of his sword into the floor, straightening his fencing glove while looking directly at me.

“That’s hardly the way to greet a lady,” I replied, folding my arms across my chest.

“Forgive me, but my anger is not directed toward you, milady,” he said sincerely. He pointed his sword at Adrian. “You made this mess. You clean it up. I already told you that I want no part of this.”

Adrian shrugged with one shoulder. “I can’t really take her back now, can I? Half the city would be after me.”

“You should have thought about that beforehand. That’s your problem, Adrian. You never think through your idiotic plans.”

“My plans have results.”
