“That means that the boy has a stronger resistance to the spiritual realm,” the king said. “Demons also use charmspeak. If Henrik resisted you, then he most likely resisted the demon possessing him as well. He’s probably still resisting.”

“But we can’t be too cautious,” Hugo added. “A human can only fight demons for so long.”

“Yes, but this boy is stronger against demons than the others,” Vito said. “As long as he continues to fight against the demon, we can extract it.”

The other Judge that came with us nudged Jacques, who had been lost in thought.

“You’ll help him, Jacques. Won’t you?” the other Judge asked. “You extracted my demon. As well as Zosar’s and George’s.”

Jacques looked at the Judge from the corner of his eye, then back into nothing.

“If he’s fighting against the demon, I can extract it,” Jacques replied eventually. “If he has accepted his demon, it’s another story.”

“Why would Henrik accept a demon?” I asked.

“Demons offer power,” Jacques replied. “The kind of power humans thirst for more than anything. Some accept theirdemons because they want to hold power over the people around them. Some accept because they don’t have any purpose in their current lives. Some accept because they believe they don’t have a way to survive otherwise.”

“You were the last one,” King Melchior added, nodding at Jacques with a warm smile. “I still haven’t forgotten that teenage gang leader who tried to kill me. Twice.”

Jacques rolled his eyes and grunted.

“I’m sorry, did you just saygang leader?” I asked.

Jacques waved his hand dismissively, changing the subject. “I can stay and try to extract the demon. It might take some time. The question is, what are we going to do with Esmeralda?”

Everyone looked at me. I jumped at the sudden attention.

“Me?” I asked.

“Yes, you,” Jacques replied. “Without your wings, it’s dangerous for you here with a demon on the loose.”

“I can protect her,” Luc objected.

Jacques turned around to face him. “Then protect her by taking her home. I don’t want her back on Adrian’s ship for the next three months—”

“I wouldn’t mind it,” a voice chimed in.

We turned around to see Adrian behind us, smirking in satisfaction.

“How the hell did he get in here?” Hugo asked.

“How did we not notice him?” Vito asked.

Adrian smiled and stepped forward. Luc’s wings flew open, and he flew in front of Adrian, the ground shaking as he landed. Adrian only chuckled.

“Easy, Feathers,” Adrian said nonchalantly. “I’m not here to harm your king.”

I couldn’t see Luc’s face, but I could see the anger in his shoulders.

“That’s enough, Rhys,” King Melchior said calmly. “Let me speak to him.”

Luc hesitated, but stepped to the side. He, however, kept a murderous eye on Adrian as Adrian walked past us and straight for the king.

“You noticed I was here right away, didn’t you?” Adrian asked the king.

King Melchior gave a quick smile and leaned forward in his seat.

“I wanted to see when you would chime in,” the king said. “You’re quite bold to sneak into the throne room of the Siren King. If your heart wasn’t already declared pure, I would have put an end to you immediately.”
