I squeezed by eyes shut right before I plummeted to the bottom. I screamed as the air rushed out of my lungs, suffocating me.

With a gasp, the plummeting stopped.

And two arms wrapped around me tighter than I had ever known.

“You haveno ideahow much trouble you’re in, woman,” a voice barked in my ear.

Gasping for air, I opened my eyes to Jacques’s furious expression.

“Jacques?” I asked, panting from the fall. “Why? How did you…?

He placed me on my shaking feet, his eyebrows matting in furious confusion as he looked at my back. I had to steady myself on his arms, the adrenaline taking all the strength out of my legs.

“Did you make a parachute?” he asked. “Of all thestupidthings you’re willing to do—”

I looked up at Luc’s room.

“How the hell did you catch me from here?” I interrupted. “How did your arms not snap in half?”

I yelped as he gripped my waist and hoisted me up into the air. It was incredibly effortless for him. I felt like a cat instead of a person.

He gave me a blank stare, but I could see the pride in his eyes.

“I told you,” he huffed. “Demon residue.”

He placed me back on the ground, starting to untie the knots in the ropes around my legs.

“Demons provide super-human strength,” he explained. “It doesn’t fully leave, even when the demon does. Now, explain to me why you decided to drop out of the sky and risk your soul’s reincarnation.

“I know you won’t believe me—”

“I will, probably. At this point, I wouldn’t put anything past you—”

“It was an accident.”

“Yes, I can see how building a parachute could happen by chance.”

“No, no. The parachute was on purpose, but the falling was accidental.”

“Andwhydid you make a parachute?”

“Luc’s gone.”

“I don’t see why that’s alarming enough to drop to your death.”

“He threatened to go after Adrian.”

“Slightly more alarming, I suppose.” He pulled the ropes from my legs and waist and stood straight, scratching his chin. “What is Luc’s obsession with Adrian anyway?”

“Adrian killed Luc’s fiancée.”

Jacques stopped scratching his face. “That explains a lot then.”

I grabbed his arm. “He’ll be cursed again, Jacques —”

“So you decided to risk your life to stop him?”

“What was I supposed to do? Stay still?”
