Luc.

“Your Majesty?” Luc called, coming forward to his bed. “What happened? I saw them carry you—”

He stopped, eyes narrowing at Adrian.

“You!” Luc called, jumping at us, whipping his wings in fury.

I let go of the king’s hand and jumped between Luc and Adrian, holding out my arms to block them from each other. My arms were tiny compared to Luc’s wings, but I didn’t back down.

“It wasn’t him!” I said.

“Then why—”

“Rhys,” the king whispered out.

Luc’s fury fell from his face, and he went to the king’s side. He bowed in respect.

“Remember…” the king continued, “remember the gift I have given you.”

Luc’s shoulders dropped, along with his eyes.

“Yes, Your Majesty,” he said. “I will remember.”

“Gift?” I asked.

Luc looked at me for a moment but didn’t answer. He didn’t have the chance to.

“It’s gone!” Jacques announced, storming into the room. “The Eros has been taken from the throne.”

There were gasps and murmurs by the sirens standing by, Luc clenching his fists. Vito gripped his hair. Even Hugo paled. Adrian and I, however, were confused.

“What does that mean?” Adrian asked.

“It means that whoever has it can control the spiritual world,” Luc said.

“Which means it’s going to be difficult to catch the bastard,” Jacques added. “If any of the sirens get close to him, he can command them at will as long as he possesses the stone. TheJudges aren’t affected by it, however…” He swallowed. “Two of my men are dead now.”

The room went silent. Adrian licked his bottom lip, looking down.

“It was my brother, wasn’t it?” he asked.

Jacques didn’t show any emotion as he nodded. “It seems his demon is in full control now.”

Adrian narrowed his eyes in pain. There was a wave of silence. After a moment, he licked his lips, an ironic smile coming to them.

“You said the Eros controls sirens, correct?” Adrian asked.

Jacques nodded. “That’s right.”

“What about humans?”

“It doesn’t have any effects on humans or demons. That’s why Judges can—”

Jacques stopped, looking blankly at Adrian. Adrian popped his eyebrow, a full smile coming to his face.

“I have half of a pirate crew trained to take treasure, mate,” Adrian said. “If you need backup, all you have to do is ask.”

Jacques gave a long sigh, looking off to the doorway and nodding.
