“Three! What a tragedy you can’t see them for the rest of the year! If only the king would hire the sirens to…oh, well, that’s not my place to say I guess. It’s between the king and the humans.”

He seemed lost in thought for a moment, processing my words.

“So sorry to burden you,” I said. “Please forget I said anything about it.”

I turned my back on him as I left him in the hall, this time not hiding my smile behind my hand.

Some of the humans were that easy to get rid of. The others, however, were more stubborn.

As humans, Guardians were susceptible to charmspeak, however, not in the Den of Sirens. How could you be deceived when you already saw the world for what it truly was? But getting the Guardians outside the den was quite the task. They had their missions from the king, and they chose to loyally pursue them.

I didn’t understand why. They were disloyal to each other so easily.

And that would be their downfall.

“I heard that Fredrick and Gerrald were given special orders by the king,” I told a small group of Guardians. “A type of promotion, I wager.”

“Promotion?” one of them asked. “I didn’t realize that was an option.”

“Of course, of course,” I said. “There’s always a system of hierarchy, you know. Spiritual and physical realms alike. Anyway, it’s cause for celebration, isn’t it?”

A couple of them nodded enthusiastically, while a couple others looked confused. That was fine. I didn’t need all of them to question it. I just needed one of the stronger ones to start questioning. When the strong ones questioned, the others followed along just to appear as equally strong.

“I think you all work so hard,” I added. “I do hope you all see promotions as well!”

To this, they gave a small cheer, and they talked of grand dreams until I couldn’t stand the sound of their voices anymore.

As I stood to leave, Silvan, another one of the Guardians, approached me.

“Quick question,” he said, hesitating to ask. “Would you tell me when there’s an opportunity for a promotion?”

I tried to contain my smile. “Of course. I’d be happy to.”

Over the course of a month, five of them asked me that. They were incredibly anxious to prove themselves worthy, and even more so, determined to prove themselves more worthy than the others.

“I’ve had more years in the military than you,” Silvan said, puffing up his chest. “Be careful who you’re talking to.”

Alain wasn’t interested in backing down. “And I’ve been in much higher stations. Years doesn’t outrank rank.”

“You’re not my superior.”

“Maybe I should be.”

Juanell rolled her eyes. “Oh, men and their show of power. How boorish.”

Neva, with her arms folded close to her, nodded in agreement. “Quite. It would be much better if it was just us women.”

“You read my mind!” Juanell exclaimed.

They smiled at each other right before turning their heads with a sharp expression and a distasteful pucker of their lips.

It was easy to turn the humans on each other. Not that I really needed to set it up. If I waited long enough, they would do it on their own.

I looked down on the ring on my finger, its shine beginning to fade. I didn’t want to wait any longer. It was time to get rid of thesespecialhumans.
