“No!” Henrik howled, coming to his brother’s side.

He rolled Adrian over, pulling apart Adrian’s shirt to look at the blood streaming from his side. Adrian’s eyes were only half open, his breath getting shorter and shorter.

“Adrian…” Henrik whispered, his hands shaking. “I couldn’t stop him…I’d never…”

Adrian hissed again. “I’m surprised you didn’t do it sooner, to be honest.”

Henrik placed his hands on Adrian’s wound as blood gushed out of his side.

“No! You don’t deserve death!” Henrik replied. “You’re my responsibility…you’re my family.”

Jacques stumbled forward, clutching the back of his neck. “Goddamn demons. I should put a sword through you for throwing me halfway across the—”

“Help me,” Henrik begged, looking up at Jacques. “I beg of you, help me save him.”

Jacques sighed with gritted teeth before glancing at me. He then looked back at Henrik.

“There’s only one option,” Jacques said.

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small lighter. Henrik swallowed, flinching as Jacques lit it.

“Are you sure?” Jacques asked Henrik.

Henrik looked at Adrian, who was writhing in pain, blood gushing from his side onto the marble floor. He then looked back at Jacques.

Henrik nodded. “I’ll do anything.”

Jacques leaned down, grabbing Henrik by the arm.

“Then grit your teeth,” Jacques said. “Because this isreallygoing to hurt.”

CHAPTER 47—HEALED

“This is hardly worth the time,” Hugo said, his arms folded across his chest.

King Melchior gently held up his hand to quiet his left-hand advisor, his eyes focused on Adrian’s body across the stone slab in front of him. With the Eros returned to the throne, the king had recovered instantly.

We couldn’t say the same about Adrian.

Adrian had completely lost consciousness, his skin paled and discolored. His faint heartbeat was the only reassurance that he wasn’t completely dead, but the way the color had drained from his face, we could all tell that there were only moments before his end.

All I could do was hold his hand, much like I did when the king was ill. There was nothing else I could do, and it made tears stream down my face as I turned to the king.

“Father…” I whispered quietly.

He dimly smiled at the title and gave a small nod, then motioned for me to step aside. I hesitated until Luc put his hand on my shoulder and pulled me close to his side. The king approached Adrian and put a hand on his chest.

“You returned my daughter to me and protected her from the demon that tried to destroy her,” King Melchior said. “You assisted in restoring freewill to my creations, and so—this once—I will restore your body.”

There was a teal glow from the king’s hand that weaved deep into Adrian’s side. The blood in his clothes disappeared, and the torn threads mended. For the first time in what seemed like hours, Adrian took a deep breath, but he didn’t open his eyes.

The king took a step back, his face still solemn.

“Bring me his brother,” the king commanded, his voice void of any emotion.

Jacques stepped forward, pulling Henrik forward by his arm. Henrik didn’t attempt to stand straight, but instead, leaned to one side, his shirt burned and loosely hanging from his body. He kept his head bowed, but I couldn’t tell if it was from pain or guilt.

“You’ve burned out the demon?” the king asked Jacques.
