“Aren’t they?” I asked, leaning in closer.

She went silent, and I could feel her apprehension. Everything in my body was begging to kiss her, but I held myself back. We both knew this was a spell, but I was going to convince her it was worth it first.

I stepped away and leaned against the balcony rail, giving her some space to breathe.

“Even when we were apart, I couldn’t stop thinking about you,” I said. “Isn’t the spell only supposed to work when we’re in the same room?”

She shrugged. “The effects can last a few minutes or a few days.”

“But it’s been weeks, and I’ve missed you for every moment of them.”

She held her arms as if she were cold, and I could tell that she was on the fence. Yes, she was a siren. Yes, I was under a spell. But I needed her to understand that I didn’t care. I was happy this way.

Spell or not, this was the first time I felt happy.

I moved away from the balcony rail and closed the gap between us, taking her by the elbows and bringing her in close to me. Her shoulders came closer to her ears, and the shyness made me even more obsessed with touching her.

“Y-you know that I can manipulate you,” she stammered. “I just have to change my voice—”

“Then manipulate me,” I said, unable to keep my fingers out of her hair at this point. “Command me whenever it pleases you. I know I’m safe under your spell, princess.”

Her shoulders laxed, and I took the opportunity to grab her hand and put it against my chest.

“You made me look into my own darkness until I could find my light,” I whispered. “Your power didn’t hurt me, Esmeralda. It made me who I am now.”

I felt her body mold closer to mine, and I could tell that she was giving in. I had seduced the siren, and I had never been so proud of an accomplishment in entire my life.

“Whether it’s a spell or a curse,” I whispered in her ear, “I want nothing more than to have you by my side.”

I sealed my words with a kiss. I waited, expecting her to back away like she had the time I kissed her in my room, but she didn’t. I brought her in closer as she submitted to me, deepening my kiss as a stronger seal.

If it wasn’t true love, I didn’t care. I never believed in such a thing anyway.

But I believed in feeling truly alive.

That’s how I felt with her. That was all I needed.

HENRIK

THREE

His name was Dagon.

I had no idea why I knew this; he had never spoken his name to me. It wasn’t often that creatures of the spirit world introduced themselves, and I had never been given a name before.

But I knew his name was Dagon. And I knew he was a demon.

You don’t think your brother is capable of his tasssk, do you?Dagon asked.

I rubbed the bridge of my nose.

“He’ll be fine,” I replied. “He’s used to doing questionable acts.”

Yesss…but just how many more will he do at your expenssse?

I laughed ironically to myself.

“Expense or request?” I asked. “I was the one who told him to get her blood.”
