“Don’t worry,” she continued. “I’ll get Jacques. He can get rid of the demon—”

“And why should I get rid of him?” I barked. “So I can be controlled by creatures like you?”

She froze. I stood from the floor, my body aching. Her hand came to my shoulder, but I stepped out of her grasp.

“Get out,” I warned. “There’s no telling what we’ll do to you.”

“You won’t hurt me,” she said, her voice just as high as before. Was she still trying to charm me? “You won’t let him.”

“And why shouldn’t I?” I asked, turning to her. “Shouldn’t I have a way to protect myself from your power?”

She met my eyes, not answering. Perhaps she realized she couldn’t control me with Dagon present. Her shoulders slumped in defeat.

“I had no idea…” she started. “I care about you. You’ve always been strong and kind—”

“And where did my kindness get me? Kicked out of the navy? A laughingstock to the king himself? I’ve been possessed by both a demon and a siren. Has mykindnessled me anywhere profitable?”

She seemed to fumble around for her words.

Ssshe’s trying to strategize,Dagon said.I can give you power over her.

I felt him start to take over, but I pulled him back.

I didn’t trust him either. I didn’t trust either one of them.

“Fight him,” Esmeralda said. “Don’t let him take over—”

I grabbed her hand before she could try and touch me—before she could use her fingers to control me—and pulled her close to look her in the eyes.

Even like this, I wanted her.

“If I get rid of him,” I said, “will you come to me?”

She didn’t speak at first. Dagon interrupted.

You don’t have to get rid of me,he said.We can take her for ourselvesss right now.

I stepped back from her before he could do what he was implying.

“No!” I said out loud. “I won’t—”

Don’t you want her? Don’t you want to know how she tastesss?

“We’ll get rid of the demon,” Esmeralda said, cutting into my thoughts. “We’ll get rid of him so—”

“So you can possess me?”

Dagon took my hands and forced her against the wall.

What are you doing? I asked him.

Protecting you from her ssspell,he replied.

Why were they both torturing me? I didn’t have power. I had nothing at all worth tricking me for. And I had done nothing for her. There was no reason for her to save me. I helped kidnap her, sacrificed her blood, and kept her from her family.

There was no reason for her to come to me. Not unless she wanted to own me.

“Do you want my soul to play with?” I asked her.
