I squeezed my pillow.

It’ll be okay, Mother. I’ll keep our family together now that you’re gone. I won’t let us fall apart.

My pillow sighed.

I gasped, eyes shooting open. I sat up, my head spinning from the sudden shift in position as I looked behind me. Adrian looked up at me, half awake, his eyes still heavy.

“Morning, Princess Blood,” he croaked. “Did you enjoy sleeping in my bed last night?”

I gasped a second time, wondering how I could have forgotten that I was kidnapped and staying in a room with a pirate.

Well, a lot had happened in a few days.

Wait…why was I in Adrian’s bed and not on the floor?

Memories of the previous night hit me like a tidal wave. There was a storm. Thunder, lightning, and then I—

Oh no…

I turned my face away and tried to straighten my hair.

“How dare you try to take advantage of an honest lady, Captain.”

Even I couldn’t deny the crack in my voice as I said it.

He chuckled. The bed shifted, and suddenly his chin was against my shoulder.

“First,” he said deep in my ear in a low, groggy voice, “I’m no honest gentleman. Second, youcame ontomelast night.”

I threw my head back to scold him, not realizing how close he was. I turned away quickly, cheeks burning.

“I-I-I did no such thing,” I insisted.

“You don’t remember?” he teased. “How scared you were during the storm? How you jumped into my bed and gripped onto my shirt, begging me to protect you?”

I swallowed and shook my head.

“You held on so tight to me all night,” he continued. “I’m sure there’s fingernail dents in my neck still. Why don’t you look for me?”

I slithered out of bed, not looking at him. “You’re full of stories.”

“Not to mention all the dirty little things you say in your sleep…”

I picked up the belt Adrian had given me yesterday and fastened it around my waist, the coolness of his shirt next to my skin. I tried to ignore how much I now smelled like him, as well as the coy look he was giving me from his bed.

“I’m going to help Luc with breakfast,” I said, storming out the door.

I slammed it behind me, still dizzy as I tried to scrub the memory of last night out of my head.

“Don’t leave me, please. I’m so scared.”

“I’ve got you, princess.”

“Hold me…just for a little bit. Until it stops.”

I inwardly groaned, drowning in embarrassment.

How could I throw myself at him like that? Even if I was half asleep at the time and thought it was a dream…
