He slumped back, breathing heavily as he curled up in pain.

“Luc!” I cried, holding him steady. “What happened?”

“One of the bastards got me,” he whispered, his eyes rolling to the back of his head.

He passed out cold on the deck. I cried for Henrik, who came to our side and ordered the men to take Luc down to his room. My hand slid from Luc’s grasp as they took him.

“He protected me,” I muttered to myself, eyes tearing from guilt.

Henrik’s hands came to my shoulders. “Are you all right?”

“Yes, but Luc—”

“I’ll take care of him. I promise.”

Henrik’s eyes softened. My hands shook.

Someone groaned next to us. “I’m fine, thanks for asking.”

Adrian rolled his tongue across his lip as he came to his feet and glared at both of us.

“What was all that then?” he asked Henrik.

Henrik helped me to my feet as he spoke to Adrian. “The spirit realm.”

“I got that, smartass. But whatwasthat?”

“Sirens,” I said mindlessly.

“And what was it you threw at them?” Adrian asked Henrik, not seeming to hear me.

“Stones soaked in holy water,” Henrik replied. “The combination of natural earth and something connected to the spirit realm burns them.”

“So they’re not dead?” Adrian asked.

Henrik shook his head. “They’re depleted of energy, probably. They’ll come back, though. Sirens are called to declare the hearts of men good or evil, remember?”

I started to shake, my nerves taking over again. It felt like my soul was trying to separate from my body, just as my mind had separated from reality. I felt Henrik’s arms wrap around me.

“What’s wrong with her?” Adrian asked, his voice seeming far away.

“She’s in shock, you idiot.”

My gaze met Adrian’s. He stared into my soul, jaw firm. I could see him, but I couldn’t say anything or even move.

“Take her back to my room,” he commanded. “Watch her until I return from checking on the rest of the men. Get ready to prepare more of those stones and water. I refuse to go down so easily, from a demon, fairy, or otherwise.”

“Captain!” a voice called from the crow’s nest. “Look starboard!”

Adrian turned his head, looking out onto the horizon. When he stopped, I gasped, seeing what the commotion was about.

In the far distance was a red beam, shooting up from the ocean to the sky, turning into a blood red star.

Adrian smiled. “The Eros.”

CHAPTER 13—AID

Henrik walked me back to Adrian’s room, gently helping me to sit on the sofa. I couldn’t help but look at my arm, the blood now dry against it. Henrik followed my eyes. He knelt down and brushed his shirt against the blood, flicking it away.
