“You should probably also know that she stays in my room,” Adrian said. “Usually in my bed. With me.”

I turned around, putting a hand on his chest to stop him. “Adrian, please…”

“What?” Adrian asked. “Afraid what the truth will cost you?”

He stared at me, challenging me. It pissed me off.

“Step back,” I hissed at him.

His cockiness dropped off his face as he stepped back.

“Go stand at the entrance,” I commanded. “This conversation is difficult enough without your comments.”

He huffed, stepping back slowly to return to the entrance. I was grateful that he didn’t fight me on it like he usually would.

Jacques stood, coming to meet me at the bars. I took a step back.

“Quite bold, aren’t you?” Jacques taunted. “Charming even the captain himself into your bed.”

“First of all, it’shisbed, and I sleep on the floor. Second off, you have a lot of nerve to assume such a thing.”

He sighed. “I should have known this is something a woman like you would do.”

“A womanlike me?” I spat back. “Care to elaborate?”

He shrugged but didn’t answer.

“Well, if I’m so horrid,” I continued, “why are you here?”

“My father sent me to retrieve you.”

His words were cold and empty, same as his eyes. I swallowed, trying to keep my composure.

“Is he well?” I asked.

Jacques chuckled, a sharp look in his eyes. “Of course. I’ll tell him of your concern next time I see him. I’m sure he’ll be touched.”

He said each word with such poison that I thought his saliva could melt the bars between us. I stepped back just in case it could. Jacques stepped back as well, creating even more distance between us. He stared, not saying a word. It unnerved me, my heart speeding up as I started to sweat.

“I don’t want to speak with so many ears listening,” I finally said. “We’ll continue this later.”

“Later, there will be far more ears listening,” he said, chuckling, “I guarantee it.”

I glanced at him for a long moment, trying to process his words. Another riddle of his, no doubt. Such a strange man.

I walked back toward the stairs where Adrian was waiting.

“He seems charming,” Adrian teased.

I huffed and went back to the deck, rubbing my face with my hands in frustration. The salty air whipped against my skin, the red light of the Eros mocking me as I stared into the unknown.

Adrian came up beside me, shoving his hands in his pockets and looking out onto the Eros alongside me.

“You two have an unusual relationship,” Adrian commented.

I sighed. “You don’t know the half of it.”

“You’re actually planning on marrying him?”
