“What have they been saying on land?”

Jacques shrugged.

Luc stepped up closer to the cell, asking again, his voice changing into the playful sing-song he did when he met hard-headed people.

“You should answer questions when asked, shouldn’t you?” Luc asked.

Jacques leaned forward, not even blinking. “I don’t have to explain anything toyou, do I?”

Luc stared at Jacques for a long moment. With a hiss, Luc jumped back from the bars, putting a hand between Jacques and me, as if to protect me from a wild beast.

“You’re…” Luc started, but didn’t finish.

Jacques gave a single nod.

“Why are you here?” Luc asked.

“Why do you think?”

Silence passed between them, confusing me even more.

I tapped Luc on the shoulder. “Gentlemen?”

“Don’t worry,” Jacques said to Luc, ignoring me completely as he always did. “I’m not in any rush. There’s plenty of time.”

Jacques picked up the bowl of soup, bringing it to his lips with a smile. He sipped it, sucking it and making a face.

“A little salty,” Jacques said with a twisted grin.

Luc stood, seemingly frozen.

“You’re dismissed,” Jacques finally said.

Luc stepped back more, grabbing my hand and dragging me back up to the deck. The wind blew his hair around like a hurricane, his breath shallowing.

“Luc, what’s—”

He grabbed my shoulders. “Don’t go down there again.”

I blinked. “What? Why?”

“Do you trust me, little dove?” he asked, taking my hands and putting them against his face.

I nodded mindlessly, confused at his wild expression.

“Then trust me when I say that you need to stay away from him.”

He opened his mouth to say something else, but shut it.

“Luc, why—?”

He shook his head and stepped away before I could say anything else. With the pained and berserk look in his eyes, I couldn’t even form a question.

I had seen Luc be many things. This was the first time I had ever seen him afraid.

CHAPTER 19—CONFESSIONS

I pounded on Henrik’s door.
