Luc blinked innocently. “What’s what?”

“How did you get Henrik to leave like that? It was incredibly…unnatural.”

Luc licked his bottom lip, looking over his shoulder. He turned back to me, eyes narrowing on my wrist. He lifted up my arm, tracing the marks that Henrik had left on it.

“Did Henrik say he was in love with you?” Luc asked.

I blinked. “Yes, but how did…”

“Did Adrian? Or any of the other men on the ship?”

“That seems a little obsessive.” I tsked.

He put two fingers to my wrist. “Your heart is racing.”

“Under the circumstances, I don’t find it inappropriate.”

His lips twitched. “What if I told you I loved you?”

He put an arm around my waist and pulled me in, staring hard at me. I could tell by his eyes that he was only teasing me again, and I didn’t appreciate the joke. I pushed him away.

“Stop playing around, Luc. It isn’t funny.”

“What if I was being sincere?” he asked. “Couldn’t you love a man like me?”

He sweetened his voice as he smiled innocently at me, but I still didn’t like this teasing.

“That innocent act won’t work on me,” I said. “So stop.”

“What if I do this?”

He leaned in and kissed my temple, his lips lingering as he breathed close to my ear.

“What about now?” he whispered darkly.

I stepped back a little, confused. “Luc…”

He reached for my hand, flipping it over and putting two fingers to my wrist again. He smiled, a breathy chuckle leaving his lips.

“Your pulseslowed,” he said. “That settles it then.”

I retracted my hand. “Why are you so obsessed with my pulse? Do you really think a sweet voice and a friendly kiss would be enough to make my heart race?”

“It would,” he replied, “if you were human.”

He held my gaze, not blinking, not wavering. His eyes narrowed slightly.

I laughed.

“What on earth are you talking about?” I asked, backing away from him.

“Your pulse doesn’t race for me,” he said, stepping forward to follow me. “You don’t react to my sweeter tones. You don’t listento my commands like the rest of the crew does. The only reason you wouldn’t respond to me is if we were of the same world.”

I was even more confused than before. “What?”

He leaned down to my ear.

“The truth is, I’m a siren, little dove,” he whispered. “And so are you.”
